All I am gonna say is that they (ACLU) helped a girlfriend and mine in high school, no money at all, and, yes, we did win our case.

They didn't get a cent, I can assure you.

Of course, I was in high school, sometime between the WWII and the Viet Nam War.

My information may be dated, as am I.

I have a boss and a few people in the area that are aclu members. They are all shaking their heads at this, wondering if the aclu leadership has lost their minds.

When you mentioned the high school student, I thought you meant the kids from a couple of months ago. He wanted to wear shorts to school, the school said no, that was against their dress code policy. the kid said that, since girls were allowed to wear skirts, he should be allowed to wear shorts. The school said no. The aclu sued, on his behalf, so that he would be allowed to wear, not shorts, but skirts to school.
So now the school system has to spend money, not on educating our children, but to pay legal bills because some kid wants to wear shorty pants in school. Where do shorty pants in school fit into civil rights?

And education suffers in the school system. But the lawyers who brought this suit do not have a problem, because their children can afford to go to a private school.
I'm confused here.... The ACLU thinks that the individual who wants to wear shorts to school has the right to do so. However, the school does not have the right to deny that person his rights. The ACLU must think an individuals rights must supercede the rights of society. If they believe that, then why are they always backing afirmitive action...... Affirmative Action denies the rights to individuals that qualify for a position in order to enforce the rights of others that are percieved to be victimized by society. The ACLU's actions in these cases suggest that they put the rights of a larger part of society in front of an individuals rights.
What do they stand for???
Could it be that they are a bunch of lawyers who see a particular market for radical lawyerism that is really lucrative???
Are they really about civil rights or about power lunches on the membership money? Some of the leadership of the ACLU has suggested that....
Do you really want to trust a lawyer with your membership money? A lawyer who has no accountability to the memberships money?

Yes. It goes to prove that the ACLU doesn't "pick & choose". They endorse the Constitution & the Bill of Rights, period. They have defended the KKK, in the past. I support them, for this reason. If something needs to be done, it is in the courts. I wake up every morning thanking my "lucky stars" for the ACLU

Please provide proof for this assertion. They're goal is to set/maintain "precedent". Money has nothing to do w/ it. They have dues-paying members to offset many "cost's incurred".

The ACLU recieves less the 30% of its funds from individual contributions..... It recieves almost as much from cases where they win .....

Read this and ask who was the ACLU really working over. And have you followed the chaos that hsa just happened in its leadership role?

A settlement reached by the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico and the state Children, Youth and Families Department over conditions within the juvenile justice system will cost the state more than $700,000… The money part of the settlement includes $220,000 for the six months that ACLU attorneys spent preparing their lawsuit and $400,000 for the attorneys to monitor CYFD’s compliance over the next four years. Another $85,000 was paid to six former residents of the New Mexico Boys School in Springer and one former female resident at an Albuquerque juvenile jail as compensation for physical injuries received from guards and other inmates and for insufficient medical and mental health care.
So the ACLU attorneys kept $620,000 for themselves for all their past and future “hard work” and gave the seven victims $85,000 to split between them for their physical and mental injuries? Some genuine characters, indeed. Mind you, this is a settlement, not a court order, where the attorneys fees and “monitoring costs” were roughly 7 1/2 times higher than the damages for the victims.

Again, please reference quote. If it is from Fox News or some other right-wing group, don't bother.

By ASSOCIATED PRESS
March 23, 2006

SANTA FE (AP) - A settlement reached by the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico and the state Children, Youth and Families Department over conditions within the juvenile justice system will cost the state more than $700,000.

The two sides signed an agreement last month that requires security improvements, increased mental health programs and rehabilitation services in juvenile detention facilities across the state, among other things.

Also under the agreement, the ACLU promised not to pursue litigation as long as CYFD makes a good faith effort to implement changes.

The money part of the settlement includes $220,000 for the six months that ACLU attorneys spent preparing their lawsuit and $400,000 for the attorneys to monitor CYFD's compliance over the next four years.

Another $85,000 was paid to six former residents of the New Mexico Boys School in Springer and one former female resident at an Albuquerque juvenile jail as compensation for physical injuries received from guards and other inmates and for insufficient medical and mental health care.

Attorney and former juvenile jail superintendent Justin Pennington said paying the ACLU to hold CYFD accountable is "nonsense" because the organization is not in a position to enforce the settlement agreement.

"The better course would have been to file the case and have it enforced by the court," he said.

Peter Simonson, the organization's executive director, said the ACLU is in a better position to monitor CYFD because of its expertise.

As for the teens who were compensated, ALCU attorney Peter Cubra said seven will receive about $12,000 each because of civil rights violations while in juvenile jails. One teen suffered a broken arm at the hands of a guard and another wasn't treated for hepatitis, Cubra said.

Outgoing CYFD Secretary Mary-Dale Bolson said the payments were not an admission that any harm was done but a response to "large-scale threatened litigation."

I don't agree w/ everything they do but for over 98% of the time-I do.

I didn't say everything they do is bad..... But people need to know how and why they attack certain issues and not others...... The lawyers that work for them are wealthy and they love their members to think their work is pro bono. They present that image to get people to send in their hard earned pocket change. This is what the ACLU is really about...
There is a Federal program mandated by the Civil Rights Attorneys' Fee Awards Act of 1976. If the ACLU wins a case that involves a public institution, for instance, the organization collects the full legal fees of its attorneys even though those attorneys offered their services pro bono (without charge}
So , don't you think they are looking for a victim of the government at all times? Is it you that they are concerned about or is it their bank account they are looking out for?
So next time you see a lawsuit they bring up, look to see what they really are trying to acheive and who really benifits from it. They love headlines that project a image that makes you believe that they are taking on the heavies in our government and business. But look to where they put their top resources to work . And that is cases where a substantial payout may be recieved.

You refer to their webpage as a "refrenced quote." But their webpage does not get into the leadership resignations that they have been plagued with in recent years..... Of course it wouldn't, it wants more of your money.......

Do you even understand the organization of the ACLU? You realize that the ACLU is a political lobbying organization and does not do litigation.... Surprised???? This is what your non-deductible membership fees go towards.
The ACLU Foundation is what litigates. Your membership fees do not go to that.
America is a great place. it allows people to have a difference of opinion without fearing for their lives. But , when you give your money, look for someone who uses it wisely to represent what you stand for.

I have a problem with organizations that use peoples money in a way that is rather deceptive. And that is a problem with the left and the right wing political organizations. There is a great book out there called 'The Case Against Lawyers." It has a real interesting chapter on poltical lobbying groups ... It opens the eyes to see why litigation "Follows the money."

Wolfie,if I have understood your post correctly...the lawyers from the ACLU have offered their services pro bono?
Any monies paid in settlement...are paid to the ACLU?
And the financial benefit received by those lawyers is...lunch money?
Am I correct in assuming this?
