Boy, I would have hated to have missed that call! ![]() As for your registration, it would seem that if you have a piece of paper from the government saying it was registered (that's how it's done here) then there must be a computer snafu and it will get worked out. |

Thanks Did another hour at the track today. Bit tired from yesterday so not quite as hard. Ironically I didn't use the anti-perspirant as I thought I didn't pack it. Definitely more sweating but it was still OK after 30-min. Stump seems to have held up OK this weekend. I found this T shirt which I have on order. I saw this British leg amp sprinter (runner) with one on: ![]() Last edited by Alex Simmons : 31-08.-2008 at 06:57 PM. |

I'm buzzing with excitement, like a kid on the night before Xmas.
Will reveal all on the 30th of this month - 5 days before the Lake Biwa "race". See you all then. TYSON ![]()

You already have a FTP of 330 watts? Damn! That's fast, I have a plateau at 320 watts for 2 months now. But the good news is my FTP stayed at 320 watts while my trainings load decreased and especially my L4 workload decreased a lot. I am too busy at work so I can't train that much.

Ah l think l follow, training and diet is going well then? One question Tyson if you don't mind sharing is how many hours on average do you train a week on the trainer and how many out on your trusty steed in the fresh mountain air? |

It varies, but just to give you an idea; yesterday (Sunday) did 84 km with some nasty climbs, just to get used to sitting in the saddle. Today rest. Tomorrow (Tues) 90 mins on the trainer doing L4 work. plus 1x1 @ 540watts just for fun. This includes 15 minute warmup: 5 mins @150, 5mins @160 - 270W and finally 5 mins @ 160W and of course warmdown. Wednesday, back out on the road on a 57km course with plenty of climbing. Thurs rest. Friday, 90 mins on the trainer doing L5 (4 x5) and after 10 mins of light spinning, L6 workout (4x1) @ 500 - 530W. Warmup as above but with the 2nd 5 mins rapidly increasing to 300 watts. In the trainer workouts I try to do some light spinning at 220W, but unfortunately soon get bored. Saturday, rest. Sunday, 115km ride with some 20km or more of climbs. Pretty relaxed eh! Tyson ![]()

Another week and a bit has gone by now and no major dramas. Leg and body holding up. Actually the worst bit was falling up a step outside the velodrome while carrying my bike, a bag and a backpack. Prosthetic foot just didn't quite clear the last step and, well, down I went. It seemed to take an etermity as I tried to keep it up. Bit of a thump to the thigh but otherwise OK. It was pissing down rain at the time of course wasn't it
.Have now started my "official" training program. Two visits to the track on the weekend. An hour's riding each. An hour yesterday and a short recovery roll today. Apart from just rolling the track, some pacelining, moving up n down the track etc, I tried some standing starts, which present several challenges, technical and physical. So far I'm topping out at about 950 watts. Given my physical condition, that's not too bad - it's about 400-500 watts down on "normal" though so lots to work on there. I continue to experiment with things. One was to look into ways to replicate the sideways roll that's missing from having no ankle on the left side. I visited a skateboard shop as I wanted to remind myself of how skateboard trucks work / are set up. If I could incorporate that idea, it could be a winner. But I don't have the machining shop or skills for that, so I'll need some of my engineer buddies to look into that. In the meantime (while I was chatting to this absolutely stunning woman there buying in-line skates for her 6 yo ) I learned they had polyurethane spacers sometimes used between the board and the truck for vibration dampning and to reduce the impact on the board. So I took a couple of those home and I've placed one under my cleat. Two rides on the trainer and it has not moved or loosened, so that's good. It seems to allow more sideways roll but I really won't know until I get back to the track this weekend. The other was an idea I got following a conversation with a guy yesterday who makes prosthetics for paralympians (he's just back from Beijing). We chatted about stuff and he made a suggestion about the gap created between the upper shin just below the patella and the socket when you're on the bike (it's not there when you stand/walk). It's there since the leg is designed for walking, not riding. Anyways, he said see what happens if I shove something soft down there to fill the gap. So yesterday I stuffed some sock into the gap when I was on the trainer and the impact was instant - it felt much more secure and I am certain it felt as if I could generate more power. Of course stuffing some sock down there wasn't ideal as it would keep popping out so today I dropped into the local rubber/foam supplies shop and found some off cuts foam/rubber material, fashioned up something to go in there and had a light roll today on the trainer. Needs a bit more shaping but I think this will be a goer. At least it's an idea to run with until I eventually get a socket designed specifically for the bike. Timing of that is a little unclear. I need to balance the desire to have one yesterday versus the ever gradual changes in shape of my stump. Get a socket too early, and after a while the stump-socket interface will lose that security and the socket becomes redundant. They are not cheap either. On that, the Sydney track racing community are putting on a benefit night on 1 Nov which will include a special race carnival and a function afterwards specifically to raise funds for my specialist cycling equipment needs. How cool is that? ![]() |

OK, got through rest of week OK. It didn't kill me.... but it was hard enough.
![]() Tuesday an hour on indoor trainer (150W), Wed 1/2 hour recovery (trainer). Thursday another short trainer ride with a couple of 5-min TT level efforts. Saturday I did an hour in Centennial Park (AP 184W, NP 192W) which was probably a bit harder than intended but it just seems too slow otherwise! No stops needed. Today it was raining/stormy so a 90-min ride on indoor trainer (AP 150W) with a 5-min L4 effort and a 3-min L5 effort. This was my longest ride so far. I watched "Nacho Libre" DVD to pass the time. It was moderately amusing. I needed a 10-min break halfway though to remove, wipe down and replace leg but otherwise stumpy is holding up OK. I think I've racked up more indoor trainer time this week than the entire 2006/2007 season! ![]() Another week of similar to come, then I do some testing the following week - MAP and a 10-mile TT .As a side note, Jody Cundy of Team GB Paracycling team and who just won gold in Beijing, including a new WR in the Kilo TT (1:05.4 ), has been kind enough to answer some of my technical questions about his leg and set up (he is also a below knee amputee). ![]() |
