This has all come about due to the TV replays etc etc. I'm not saying that it's a good thing but sometimes a tickle up is what a players needed to bring him into line.
The South Africans and French were always guilty of off the ball stuff and it worked for them. It wore down the opponent and they could then capitalise on that.
Now the game is more open and it's the wingers scoring a lot of trys as opposed to the tight forwards, the ball is being spread wider. It's all about the mighty dollar and getting more people to the games, adding to the coffers of the rugby unions.
There are few hard men left in rugby, the likes of Richard Loe, he was feared not only cos he was a fantastic prop but he also wasn't afraid to play the game hard.

I would run at Loe (actually I have) and Andy Hayden 1000 times before I would run at Jerry Collins or Victer Matfield. As Lim puts it these are HUGE guys running 100m in bloody near even time all capable of benching 150kg+....they just hit harder, much much harder. I remember Tuigamala was considered huge at 102kg's 15 years ago, Lomu a monster at 115kg 11 years ago....now we get 1/2 backs and 1/5's at 100kg+. Not only are they bigger, they are much much stronger.

I agree the off the ball stuff has all but gone....I was bemoaning a scotish prop for a stomp that would have been part and parcel 10 years ago.....but I think it is a lot more dangerous.

I also think the Refs have to much control at scrum time. best let the front row sort them selfs out (Timing wise).

AND I still say the Aussies play a lot "Greyer" than the AB's with respect of the off side. and northern teams are renound for ball killing.

AND to say the AB's looked scared in 95 is farcicle. They Looked SICK...probably coz some pommy book maker had paid a African hotel wench to poisin them!!! 11 of the 15 ran on with food poisining that day......if they looked worried it was because they wheer concerned as to the distance to the latrine! No disrespect to SA but they where not that good in 95! Just out of interest the AB's still had Bunce Fitz and 2x Brookes in 95....cant imagine them been shy of any team!!

Somehow I couldn't see you accepting that excuse if the "Pommes" used it. Besides I can't recall them drinking anything like enough water if they were suffering from food poisoning. Are you sure it wasn't a good old fashioned hangover from drinking a couple of shandies the night before ?

Fix, did you play against Loe ?
Wow.
He was a tough nut. I remember him and Steve McDowell : both tough operators for the AB's.
Loe typified NZ rugby for me - hard, quiet, slightly menacing.
I'm sure he's a nice bloke off the pitch but I wouldn't like to meet him on the pitch.

I agree with C/Legend to the extent that the game has become cleaner - less
off the ball stuff.
But I agree with your point, if I'd have a preference I'd prefer to be hit by Frank Oliver rather than Martin Johnson.
(they'd both flatten me anyhow, so it wouldn't make much difference).

Jerry Collins is a tough hard player - enormously strong.
So to Burger the backrow forward for S Africa.
Years ago backrowers, we 6ft 1 : 15 stone.
Now they're 6ft 4 and 17 stone and hard as nails.
Same with props.

I used to play against Will Greenwood at school. He was a lot easier to take down back then.
