Dumb question, but have you checked the travel limit adjustment screws? Does it shift into 1/2/3 while you are on ANY of the crank rings, or not at all no matter which chain ring you are on? You don't want it going into 1/2 while on the big ring anyway, since that will wear out your chain really quick |

On a similar note, how well/poorly will a 9 speed chain, shifter and derailleur work with an 8 speed cassette?

The indexing distance is wrong, and the fault grows with each sprocket you traverse. It won't matter at all for the RD, since the jockey wheels keeps the chain centered in the cage anyhow. In theory it could matter a tiny bit for the cassette, since a narrower chain has to travel longer in order to snag and transfer to the next sprocket. It might matter more on the FD, since that one actually makes contact with the sides of the chain. A narrower chain here means that the FD has to travel longer to move the chain than it would have to do on a wider chain. Usually it's not that critical though. |
