I'm new enough to cycling, but had a V02 max test done. My power to weight was only 4.9 Watts/kg at Lactate threshold.
On another point - my haemocrat was ony 42% (sounds low) but my v02 max was 82 (sounds high) - I would have thought that these would be correlated. I guess the V02 max depends more critically on other stuff other than the ability of the blood to carry oxgen. Anyone else think its strange that these aren't correlated or am I missing something?

Quite a few Tour Winners/contenders have measured 40-60 min power around 7 w/kg including Miguel Indurain, Lance Armstrong and Iban Mayo. Chris Boardman also had similar values at his peak. Roadcyclist101, 4.9 watts/kg for 1 hr power or longer is quite good, a VO2 max of 82 ml-kg-min
is excellent (very few people have it this high), and quite a few good TdF contenders have lower VO2 max.
Good luck with your training, I'm sure you'll do well. :-)

depending on what you mean by "around 7 W/kg", Indurain had a power to mass of around 6.3 W/kg (see the Padilla paper on Indurain's Hour Record), while Boardman had a power to mass of around 6.5 W/kg for his Hour Record.

Actual values 6.3 w/kg Indurain, 6.5 w/kg for both, Indurain 510 watts for the hour at 81 kg, Boardman 442 watts at 68 kg. Yeah, not quite 7 w/kg. I thought Indurain weighed less than 81 kg though, I don't know if an average of their weights was taken before/after the attempt.
