Bummer! The Tour's loss for sure. He's a fun guy to watch. See you next year Alejandro.

This is another positive development from DC's perspective, although nobody wants a cyclist to withdraw from a race due to injury. First, one less potential competitor and attacker in the mountains -- Valverde gone. Second, Mancebo weakened as he is less likely to have a strong teammate in the high mountains.
Equally good is Popo has a very high chance for the white jersey, even if he works for LA. Karpets' chances are gone. Cantador (#3) is the higest placed meaningful white jersey challenge and he is at over 13 minutes to Popo. ![]() Young rider classification 1 Yaroslav Popovych (Ukr) Discovery Channel 50.20.15 2 Andrei Kashechkin (Kaz) Credit Agricole 0.07 3 Alberto Contador (Spa) Liberty Seguros-Würth 13.064 Maxim Iglinski (Kaz) Domina Vacanze 22.30 5 Vladimir Karpets (Rus) Illes Balears-Caisse d'Epargne 41.32 6 Jérôme Pineau (Fra) Bouygues Telecom 41.49 7 Thomas Lövkvist (Swe) Française Des Jeux 45.48 Popo might have to work for LA in a way that strips him of the white jersey, and Contador is a good ITTist and good climber, but I like those odds of 13 minutes from everybody except for Kashechkin.
