Agreed : they were all shattered : all of the finishers I saw (and I stayed watching it for the guys coming in over 10 minutes back on Valverde and LA.) |

I was just reminded that Vino can have a bad day and" historically" recover quickly.
Inconsistency is a trade mark of his, unfortunately! If he were to have a good this could push JU a little harder also. Of course I am just trying to project a more exciting scenario than what will probably happen.

I agree. I think LA wanted this one. Valverde had great position and took LA's lead out for a strong sprint. I hope these two take it to the line again.

If Armstrong goes into the last mountain stage solidly in control, I wouldn't be surprised if we would see him attack and try and win a stage Merckxlike..... Discovery put on a show today ....... With the pace so high , only a few could hang on. Armstrong contested the sprint and lost. There were no gifts. If it had been a decisive stage where winning the sprint was important , then he might have set up differently and maybe the outcome would be different.
I was glad to see Ullrich take over the leadership role at T-Mobile today. We might see a different Ullrich over the next few days. All it would take is one major attack and Armstrong have a bad day and we have a race !!!!!!!! Of course, history teaches us that most likely Armstrong will never have a bad day and just have great days. But .......... Remember the tour Merckx lost when that fan punched him ????? I do. And can anyone tell me what happened to that fan that punched Merckx??? Remember Beloki ?????? The TDF is not over !!!!!! I know there are many Armstrong haters, but it seems to me that everyone should enjoy this tour. We are lucky enough to watch Tour history being made. No matter what the outcome. And today may have been a epic ride that should be remembered.... "Where are you Erik Zabel when we need you ???? " Erik would have paced Ullrich up to the top and then contested the sprint with the stage winner and Armstrong 2 bike lenghts behind !!!!!!!!!! |

Like a lot of you guys, I hope Valverde and Rasmussen and any one else can make a meaningful challenge to LA.
It doesn't bother me who wins the TDF, so long as it's an exciting race. Just looking at the stage result : bodies everywhere : good climbers like Totschnig finished 4 mins down (ok he's a respitary infection but he's a great climber). Guerini and Sevilla nearly 5 mins down : Beloki and Zubeldia ditto : Menchov over 5 mins down : |

As a fan of the TDF for over 35 years I want a exciting tour. What makes the Tour a great sporting event is the emotions it can cause in a fan ..... Today was a great day for being a Armstrong fan ... Seeing him drop the others was exciting ....... But after the stage finish , when reality sets in , there is a major letdown in excitement. I realise we may have a "GRIND IT OUT WITH NO MAJOR ATTACKS TOUR," Indurain style. Boring ..... Remember the 90's??? In the stage today I was excited to see Jan Ullrich hurt with his effort, but tomorrow I want to see him ride strong. I want him to take on Armstrong and silence the German critics. I want to see Basso try and crack Armstrong even though he may be successful and hurt Armstrong's chances for a seventh..... I want to see Erik Zabel win a few sprints in the days coming . Oh yeah, that is not going to happen because Godefroody thinks coming home with the yellow will appease the German fans..... To me, that is why the TDF is the greatest sporting event in the world. Every cyclist that has ridden in the tour is a champion. |

They looked pretty cooked at the end, but Valverde and Rasmussen looked great for most of the last 10kms.

How would he do this when he's not able to win against the likes of Jochen Summer, Giosue Bonomi and Fabrizio Guidi in Austria? (no disrespect to the ones mentioned) I hope Jan can do a good showing tomorrow. |

ullrich almost always looses the tour on the first mountain stage, then he improves and by the third week he almost always can follow the best guys but by then its too late to do something about it.
today he lost almost the same time he did in 2000 when the stage finished in courchevell with the great pantani letting everybody behind and wining the stage,if only there was a rider right now like pantani was. |

dear nonameboy,
Wisdom does appear every now and again on the forum. I wish to give you a name as your present handle now seems humbly inadequate. For me you are now SOLOMON. Quote:

I am not an LA fan - but I won't let that obscure me from acknowledging that he climbed very very well today and did a lot of damage.
I am a JU fan - and I would like to see him give a good account of himself. I expressed the thought to Sopas on another thread that the JU of 1996/1997 disappered in 1998, never to appear again at the same level since. But above all else, I am a cycling fan and I want to see a competitive and entertaining TDF more than anything. I do recall the Indurain years and like the Armstrong era, those T'sDF were not as competitive as one would like. |

The sport badly needs a rider like MP : a guy who respected no ones reputation and just blasted away up the mountains. Indurain/Armstrong, it didn't matter to MP : he'd just blast and try to win. I miss MP. |

Vinoukurov will most likely attack early, he has nothing to lose. I don't think Ullrich will attack, he will try to get healthy and attack in Pyrenees. If Ullrich attacks he'll do it at Galibier, I think he really likes Madeleine and Galibier. I'll go with Santiago Botero for an attack tomorrow.
