Overwelmed with options for new bike HELP!

I am wanting to buy a new MTB. I would prefer full suspension for the added option, however most of my riding is done on trails or street. I am trying not to get to cheap of a bike because i tend to wrench on my pedals pretty hard, causing derailing, chain popping noises. I am a male 6' about 190 lbs. I dont want to spend to much, as I am definetly a newbie to biking. I have found a k2 sidewinder full suspension with disc, for $299 out the door. Is this a good bike for me or is this just a good name on a big box store bike.

If it is not a good option can you recommend something else?

Really any hardtail by a big name with Deore or better will do ya just fine. Ride em all and figure out which one ya like best. Good luck.

The K2 sidewinder is probably the best you can get out of a Walmart. That dosen't mean its any good though. I know what your talking about because I rode one.

Just so you know, I personally dislike full suspension bikes. Their frames can weigh twice as much as a good hard tail. If your just rideing the pavement, it is almost uneccesary anyway..I would just get a suspension seatpost, like a cane creek thudbuster or a USE and call it a day.

Smikey: Please let me know where you saw the K-2 Sidewinder being sold for $299. That's a great price for that bike.

I am in the market for a new dual suspension mountain bike, and may wish to consider purchasing the K-2 Sidewinder.

Smikey! Can you tell me where you found the Sidewinder at $299? I am also in the market for a new bike and have found that when it comes to features and money that can be spent, the sky is the limit. I don't need something on the order of $1000+, just a nice occasional cruiser and I kick my self when I didn't pick up the K2 Sidewinder when I first saw it. Please put me in contact with that one if you decide not to get it.

You have bad riding technique and/or you need your current bike to be serviced if you cause derailling and have chain popping noises

Cheap running gear (cassette, deralliers etc) will mess you about even if you keep it in good order and try not to put too much force on the chain.

if you're doing most of your riding on street and trails, you might actually be better off getting a hardtail. when it comes to street riding, dual suspension is actually really inefficient. if the trails you are doing arent too heavy, i would think you would be better off with hardtail. simply because you wont have to work as hard. also it'd be cheaper. i actually made the mistake of buying a DS bike. (it was cheap). and to me, its just annoying. i dont ever ride on the street. i do quite a bit of trail riding. i prefer a hard tail.

you can get a decent one from k2 or iron horse for not too much.

and discs are a b*** unless you get good ones.

Sorry for the late reply. I have been on vacation backpacking,kayaking, fishing, and 4 wheeling the backcountry of Glennallen, Alaska. As for the sidewinder it was at Sports Authority. If your local store does not have one have them pull one of the bikes from another store. DOnt let them tell you they cant do that either. As long as the store you go to does not have one in stock they can pull from elsewhere. Hope that helps!

Oh by the way I am going to try and get an IRon horse hardtail in about 29 minutes!!! Yea!!!!!

Well i picked up a 21.5" Iron Horse Quantum for $299 out the door. It has dual disc, adjustable front 100mm shock, and assorted other items. Point being that it is a world of change from my heavy 21 speed huffy that only had 4 working gears. The front shock is nice and I could see why many dont like dual suspeninsion for in town and light trail. I tried one out and was loosing ALOT of energy in spring compression. Either way this will do me for awhile until i figure out where we are moving. I did buy an extended warranty to cover the less expensive items when they wear or break.
