A lot of names in Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales are of Norse or Norwegian origin because of the Norse occupation of the British costal fringes between 700ad and 1200ad. Most settled as farmers and rasied a family and thier names are still prevalent today.

Hoy does sound Norse rather that Gaelic but the spelling would have changed over the years so it is hard to say.

I talked with my brother and he said that our last name is Scottish. little did i know that he did some research of his own a long time ago.

Yea, I thought it was. I read about him in my Bicycling magazine. really tragic. why is it that all the extrodinary people in this world always seem to have a very very dark side to them?
