Sorry man... but I have a certain limited respect for you as you seem somewhat educated. Even though, I still strongly disagree with you on almost everything...

What is it that elderly people do during the week, that is so important, that it means they have to do their shopping at weekends?

They are in Tesco, B&Q, downtown shopping precincts and our local outlet village in their droves on Friday evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday (when everybody who works all week HAS to go shopping!) Pushing their trolleys round at snails pace, stopping across the front of you for the sheer hell of it...

I mean, apart from their daily commitment to travel by public transport at peak hours, taking up space on buses and trains that could be used by commuters/school kids to travel to/from work/school. Where do they all have to be for 9am, and why don't they come home 'til around 4-5pm?

I was also wondering at what age do you completely lose your manners/consideration for others? I can stand for 15 minutes in a bus queue, only to be elbowed and shoved out of the way by a "little old lady" who has only just arrived. If she was patient I'd probably have let her go first, and lifted her bag up too, but as she shoved I stood my ground.
Sitting in one of the front seats (whilst on crutches, with my ankle heavily bandaged), a little old lady demanded I get up and give her the seat as it was reserved for the old and infirm. What part of the word infirm means "unless you aren't old too".

They constantly complain about "society/kids today" whilst hobbling around, being rude, and expecting to be treated with the utmost courtesy, and given every advantage they can get.

No rights without responsibility.

I disagree entirely with your attitude and your opinions expressed here.
Maybe it's the old people in your area that are inconsiderate and inpolite.
Or maybe it's your selfishness that clouds your objective view of older people.

Old people are entitled to go out and drive whenever they choose.
They've paid their dues and they're as entitled as you to move freely at a time of their choosing.

The opinions and attitudes you express don't surprise me however.
Unfortunately society today attempts to de-humanise people and individuals.
People are referred to as "headcount". Stigma such as "ageism" is rampant.
The essential respect for the individual has diminished.

I think we can learn a lot from older people instead of thinking that we know it all.

Decent post. I think the elderly come from a time when the world was slower. Nowadays, everyone is in a rush to get where they are going. Hurry hurry hurry. Sometimes while riding into Denver I'll ride thru this park. I usually see this old man out walking his dog. I wish to God sometimes I wasn't as caught up in the world and could live my life at his pace. Too bad we have to wait till we get old to slow down and enjoy.

It is good to be respectful to older people, but we can make an ecception in FredC's case.

I hope to god I am taken from this planet in a quick and swift manner when I am at a point that I am still financially secure, ahve raised a great family, have done everything I wanted to and made sure that when that does happen there are no burdens placed upon my family.

As for the elderly that did not get that I try to give them respect and a lot of room on the road...

I do actually have a lot of respect for the elderly (although my original post might not have reflected that)

I just assumed that given the opportunity to do things at quiet times they would.

As I said before its not ALL old people I'm ranting at, its the ones that play on their age to go out of their way to be arses.

I witnessed an incident on Sunday where a guy had been reversing a large estate with bikes on the back into a parking space (in a place where parking spaces are like the proverbial rocking horse manure), and had to re-position. As he inched forward, a little old dear in a fiesta zipped into the space and nearly caused an accident. She then claimed that she has more right to the space because she can't walk as far...

I'm sure she was a young inconsiderate person once, my point is that some people use age as an excuse.

I hope that the courtesy I extend to people now, will continue into my old age.

Like I said before self centered, egotistical horse's butts come in all age young and old and they are the ones that give others a bad name.
Not all older people are rude and not all are courteous.
The fortunate thing maybe that the real old butt-wipes may die soon.
Just kidding1! Or am I?

Thank you Zap and Huskey, it is nice of you to appreciate my good considerate mannerisms in my dotage, In earlier episodes of life I think that I was to lenient. Anyway the great thing about being old is you become invisible. You can tell young ladies that they are beautiful, and they don't bother. You can moan about anything, and they think you are bonkers. You don't have to work. You can do what you like, when you like.
Hey, how about this one. Last week, on a cycling board, I said that I SHOT over 800 acres. The next bit was that a twat posted that I from Surrey OWNS 800 acres, and I should know better. Surrey is probably the most expensive land area in the UK. All good fun, Hope to be back soon with more stupid postings after I've shot more of damn Yankees in the UK. Unfortunately I can't let go of their necks just yet. So you will see a better presentation of Lance's last Tour de France that's for sure. Other things are already in place. So we're going for this one. Can't wait.
