My new (well, not new, but new for me) full suspension frame is scheduled for delivery today. It was a close-out/leftover with a few scratches, so I only paid $150 for the frame. Can't wait to build it up.

Here's my intended build:

Stem & Seatpost: Some cheapy thing like Pricepoint Sette
Handlebars: Got those. Old set of Scott AT-3 LF's I have hanging in my basement.
Crank/BB: RaceFace Evolve XC, X-type
Shifters, deraileurrs: SRAM X9 trigger.
Chain, Cassette: SRAM

My friend up in PA is selling me a wheelset w/ XT hubs, and a set of Hayes hyd disc brakes, all for $50, so that covers that.

Fork: TBD

Well I got lucky. Got to Perf and they had a Black Super air in stock. I opened the box, and it was obvious that it's been handled quite a bit. Greasy hand prints all over it. Then I noticed another Manitou box. Upon inspection, I found it to be an 04 Super Air, white, with no lockout and 100mm travel - Perfect for my use. I also vaguely remembered seeing one on the Perf website.

So I took it to the register, and lucked out. It was on clearance for $249.99. After my 20% off coupon, I ended up walking out with the fork and a Cane Creek C2 headset (also on sale) for around $220. Not a bad haul.

One more order to Pricepoint and I'll have my ride built.

You got quite a deal. I bought an 02' Jamis Dakar Sport on ebay last Nov. for $200. I built it up with parts from my other bike. I had torn it down while I couldn't ride due to surgery.

For XC, these bikes are great: handles great, responds quick. Two things I'd watch for though: check your pivot bolts often, and don't overtighten. Overtighten doesn't cause damage (unless you get stupid), but it will cause a creak. The other is really watch the bottom bracket size. I heard three different recommendations: 107, 113 and 118. I used a 113, because I had a 113. After some more research, I did find that is what's supposed to be on there, but the tight fit of the derailleur, chain and swingarm will make you question.

My old bike is a GT hardtail, it has a nice set of bull horn handle bars I am thinking about throwing on my Giant NRS 3 for extra pull when climbing. My concern is that the bull horn bars will catch tree limbs easier when riding through the forest, plus they weigh a bit more. What are your thoughts?

Depends on how far around the bullhorns wrap. If they just turn up and point straight ahead, yeah they'll hook trees. If they wrap in a bit (pointing toward each other) then it'll be less of a problem. I ride Scott AT-3 LF bars, and they wrap around too far to hook trees.

Good thought, they do turn in a bit, not as much as the Scott's that you have. Where did you get your grips for those bars? I haven't seen log grips advertiszed in the bike shop sites. My old grips are about worn out!

Figured I'd update this since I finally got this built tonight.





Ended up with a combo of XT & XTR drivetrain parts, RaceFace X-type crank, and hyd disc brakes. Also ended up finding a Manitou Black super air for cheap at Perf (w/ coupon).

Need to throw a set of grips on her and hit the nearest piece of singletrack.

i have a specialized stumpy....with marzocchi mx pro,a really cheap bike not like the dakar...but i still want to upgrade my parts to deore Lx... i dont have much money to buy hayes discs....but my stumpy has shimano mech. disc..and also...im planning to use my custom build frame...(exclusively mine..)pairing to a rockshox pyslo...and go XC/trail....any suggestions for a fork upgrade on my god old stumpy??...thnx
