As a grammar pedant, I take exception to this. I admit I'm not
infallible, but would you care to identify some of my alleged
grammatical errors?

The mistake I was jovially pointing out was not a really grammatical
error, but a semantic one.

Well, particularly as "Careful Mark, there's enough grammar
mistakes ..." is an, ummm, "grammar mistake" as well as being semantically
uncomfortable.

That's ok. I didn't say I don't make mistrakes.

Click on SEARCH on Marks website and see what happens.

I notice from my logs that you had to look over most of my site to find
that, assuming you are the Aussie SwiftDSL customer; and I'm not sure
PHP grammar is strictly within the remit of our current altercation...

The problem you found is fixed now - I'd updated the main template
generator but forgot to update the static search page accordingly.
Thanks for finding that.

Well actually I wasn't looking for that.
I noticed earlier that you used the sentence, "Personally, my ride to work
is six-and-a-quarter miles each way, giving 62.5 miles per week."
http://tranchant.plus.com/cycling/commuting/index

I would have thought that you'd write 6.25 miles, since you use decimals at
the end of the sentence, or you could have used sixty two-and-a-half miles
at the end.
It just seemed strange to mix the two.

Anyway, when I looked for the sentence later I couldn't find it and used
your search facility, which brought up the error.

The point I was trying to make is that it's poor form to attack the original
poster for his grammar mistakes rather than the faults in his argument.

Same way it prevents knee injuries, obviously.

"Dress Smart
You can save your life and prevent crippling bike injuries if you wear a
helmet when you ride."

Why would anyone who knows anything about cycling want to link to a site run
by someone who is completely misinformed about cycling?

That's not grammer; that's style!

Agreed.

I would have thought that it is damage to the spine and legs that is
crippling. Perhaps bike helmets prevent damage to both, along with
damage to the knees.

Well, if you apply Thompson and Rivera's analytical method to the data they
gathered for their infamous paper on cycle helmet efficacy, you discover
that helmets will prevent 80% of leg injuries as well as 80% of head
injuries.

Dan,

Apart from the helmet absolutes that have been commented on earlier, I think the following may also detract from the seriousness of your fledgling site :

"To avoid flipovers, make sure you brake your rear wheel first"

"if you must brake quickly slide your rear to the back of your saddle"

"Keep your tires rock-hard to protect your rims"

"Replace tires if they are worn out"

"L.L.Bean strongly urges you to wear a helmet every time you ride. We want all your cycling miles to be safe ones"

I only got as far as the front page and one other page for these examples. I wonder if some of it is copied from elsewhere ?

I think to approach your site's banner aim of being "
The #1 Source for all things bike related" some original and more considered content is required. Then perhaps worry about the design. Though one design point for you - maybe reduce or remove your META tags - I believe they will have the opposite effect to your intention.

To me at least, with the issues above and the overall varying tone of the writing the site gave a feeling of being a rapidly assembled ( possibly partly cut-and-pasted ? ) hook to hang click-through advertising on. My apologies if this is far from the reality - just offering my impression. The local clubs page looked useful.

When there are sites such as Sheldon Brown's website ( http://www.sheldonbrown.com/articles.html ) and others that feature original content representing many years of experience, your hook perhaps needs to be a bit better in order to compete.

If you just wish to present a collection of links, of course that is fine, it is your site. I think in general though, to attract and retain viewers you must have more original content, to create "browsable" value. Without browsable value, you simply compete with search engines as a provider of links.

Best of luck whatever,

JJ
