I've never heard of a rider catching an infection in fresh air. Please advise.

Seems you've had a shitty day, they happen, but I query the wisdom of not taking an extra tube. It's easier to change than arsing about with puncture outfits, especially if it's raining. I remember that I was probably your age when I last used tyres and tubes, from then on it was tubulars only until the end. From learning all the time, for the life of me I can't see how anyone can possibly ride town crits. on clinchers as you call them and not kill yourself, or anyone else. You need fat round 13oz. tubs with less pressure in than normal, to get round the ever turning circuit. I'll give you a visual example. Watch motor bike racing, these days they ride tyres that are virtually round. You rode the track last week. You don't need side tread really, do you, the grip is on the track.
Well have a good game of bowling, get rid of the day with a bit of fun.

I did take a spare tube but it didn't fit (the valve). Today hasn't really been my day..........

How many times have I told ye to stop kissing all the trampoline senoras on Saturday evenings wandering down Las Ramblas, especially trying to remove
tonsils by non surgical means. 'Tis a wonder indeed that other bits are not afflicted just yet.

Don't bother too much. It's the social season. Just keep banging the miles in on the road when you can. No excuses, BRF is right, and so is Lim, and myself. You don't who we are, do you? And you might never know. We know each other. just get on with it. The new season starts on New Years day, so bang in the miles before then. Then it's all systems go, hail rain or snow. I'll tell when to swap endeavours. Whether you realise or not, we don't get invaded by American wankers trying to find a magic formula as to how to become a Champ. Just show 'em Phil.

I made the mistake of walking from our hotel in Barcelona, out to see the
Olympic stadium and back - in 35 degree heat (about 10 mile walk in all), while Mrs.Limerickman went shopping on Las Ramblas.

Came back to the hotel room and dosed off with the air conditioning on in the
room.
I woke up and thought I had died - literally.
I couldn't move - frozen.
Spent two days in bed - freezing, in 35 degree heat !
Then had to get on a plane with more air conditioning to get home !

The lesson of this sorry saga is - if you're roasting, take a cold shower.
On no account should you fall asleep in an air conditioned room, while sweating.

Oui, c'est bien l'achat de valeur.

Great interviews about EM with Gimondi, Maartens, Sercu and co.
His son - Axel - is also interviewed.
Axel seems like a fine person : bloody good cyclist too (hard though being the son of the greatest ever).

EM's record is astonishing - hard to fathom just how good he was.

Oh be Jasus, got the culprit. Air conditioning, blowing all the germs on a recycling system. Anyway Flu'll just poleaxe ye in 5 Minutes flat. My young mate Sanjay worked for Lufthansa at Shannon, and I asked about pasturisation of recirculated air in passenger aircraft. There is none. I really must take it up with him again. Nice Lad, do you remember those photo films of smashed up aircraft at the beginning of the Iraq war. He said that's bollacks because all the jet engines were missing off them. Another bit of bullshit from Merkia.

Was that Lufthansa Turbine Technologies or Shannon Aerospace (both Lufthansa companies) ?

Were they doctored photos ?
Can't say I took any notice as to whether or not they had engines on them.
Merkins playing tricks again wouldn't surprise me.
Bit like the envelopes filled with powder being sent to the Senators and Congressmen after 9/11.
Anthrax - turned out to be nothing.
More likely coke from their Columbian contacts ?

Freddy Maertens, another tut tut along with Gerben Karstens. Blasts you to pieces, or cocks off after two laps. The ethos? was to try to emulate EM thus the development of.......It was endemic. Axel has grafted over many years to keep his place in the peloton, but my mind wanders as to the conversations between father and son. EM was the finest of all, even though I did beat him once or twice. Mind you a lot can say the same thing.

I'll ask him this week, I know that he sorts passenger planes out. He even told me how they got Concorde in air from there. Must have been fun. he says.
Iraqi planes on the deck, could have been old library footage regurgitated.
You can't beat bags of flour and eggs. Oh yes you can, you can make cakes.

Why would you think I went out without a spare tube? In fact I always carried two. The stuff-it-with grass trick was a last resort after using both, and trying to repair punctures with frozen hands.

"War Grade" tyres and tubes were all you could get until about 1950, and they were pretty abysmal quality.

Ringing home for a lift was not an option as few people had phones or cars. There was a big "plus" though - near-empty roads.
Heigh-ho!
