Default Will the USA ever have a 51st state?

When I was in the first grade my teacher said that Puerto Rico would be our 51st state by the year 2000.

Well she was wrong. Will the USA ever have a 51st State.

If Puerto Rico does not want the honnor how about New Zealand?

Who would you like to see be our 51st state?

As soon as Fidel is gone, it will be Cuba.
For the following reasons:
  • This will be a gesture by the USA to apologise for the effects of 40+ years of sanctions against them.
  • There will no loger be a problem with importing those fine Havana cigars
  • Elian Gonzalez can decide where he wants to live (and maybe even sue the US government)
  • There will no longer be the traumatic exodus and deaths of Cubans trying to get into USA, since they will be citizens and can simply travel as they wish

I certainly don't know anyone that wants to apologize to Cuba. Cubans are made citizens as soon as they reach US soil as it is. As long as they are adults.
Don't smoke, but I believe they do have decent rum.

No apologies are necessary, they are an enemy of the US. As far as cigars you have a point. As much as I disliked Bill Clinton, his administration made the right call on Elian Gonzalez. Parental rights trump citizenship rights in my opinion. As to the deaths of many Cubans escaping oppression over the years, it is tragic. However, they have their own government to blame for that terrible situation. From what I've heard, most Cubans that have escaped to the US support the sanctions - but I'm far from an expert on that situation.

I think Bush & Cheney said Cuba needs liberating next year. We have solid proof that Castro might be thinking about giving WMD that he might have to al-Qaeda members he's thinking he might be interested in meeting almost.

Sicily came awefully close to being the 49th state. Italy somehow didn't want to lose the "lump of dung" the "Italian boot" appears to be kicking.

Right. Seward just happen to know Alaska had oil, back in 1867

For the timeline, Noble County Ohio was first drilled for oil in 1859 with the oil sold initially as a "tonic" (Senica Oil, later corrupted as "snake oil" as what was sold by Carpetbaggers in the Reconstruction period). Drake was later in Pennslyvania. The oil industry only got moving in 1901 with Spindletop and better drilling methods for high pressure reservoirs.

Your'e all wrong.

Australia is already the 51st state of the USA. Howard is just finalising the details as we speak I'm sure. Only he won't tell us what he's done for another 10 years and when he does he'll say he knew nothing about it and that it was his "advisors" who misinformed him.

"Advance Australia to America". our new national anthem.
