I would say that 100% of criminals carry guns illegaly. A lot of other people still carry guns illegaly but are not criminals. I have Carry permit for my guns. BTW you not only have to be aware of two legged species, other animals may attack you depending on where your riding. |

A handful of young thugs walked into a school in Sydney the other day wielding bats and machettes. They smashed some windows and broke some furniture. Noone was seriously injured and the thugs were apprehended and charged.
Imagine the carnage if one of them or one of the students or teachers was carrying a gun. |

Yup, those should be WWI Bersaglieri (assault troops) bicycles. In the time before there were lots of trucks, these boys were the strategic reserve: they were able to move twice as fast as regular infantry once dismounted from trains...
Think of riding on those bikes, on the roads of the time, with full gear... ![]() And I don't think these guys are soldiers, but rather re-enactors or whatever you call 'em. Quote:

Not sure...but at the Zurich 6 days they had a (antique) military bike race (with riders in full military kit) and they sell ex bikes for a fortune around the country, even if they weigh about 20kgs.

The Swiss disbanded their bicycle troop units, starting in 2001 and completing the transfers to other units sometime in 2003. |

as i understand the Vietnamese used bikes as transport too....often not ridden, but to carry shedloads of stuff along tiny little trails.
As for the swiss army thing, ill ask my brother's wife's mother's sister's husband. (my brothers uncle in law) the next time im up there. Perhaps a new thread "Military Cycling and other Hard Core Uses of Bikes"......

But I vaguely remember coming across the manufacturer for their army bicycles that is still around making them and selling them to anyone who needs a million kg undestructible bicycle monster...
Pete, you could be entirely correct. IIRC, the last Swiss Army issue machine was Shimano equipped with a 7 speed setup. While the weight was reduced from the previous model, it was still quite a tank. I would not be surprised to find the Swiss disposing of the surplus bicycles and gear, as the Swiss are a frugal nationality. I own a pair of Swiss Army Schmidt-Rubin K-31 rifles. These 1931-1957 era rifles (they actually served with reserves and saw use in target matches long after the STG-57 was adopted as the issue service rifle though) were sold in large batches to American importers. Lots of used Swiss army gear is sold here in our surplus stores. Like the over-built bicycles, Swiss gear is usually of very high quality. The genuine article bicycles are sold here in the states at very inflated prices. There are bad knockoffs available for much less, as an option to paying for a scarce original. The 'survivalist' types (those that don't weigh 300+ lbs. and smoke two packs a day) seem to be the main buyers of the fakes/clones. Collectors of militaria shell out the big money for the original issue bikes. ah...thanks to google...some information on the 1995-2003 Swiss machines. It looks like used to sell for $4000-$5000 over here. Yikes!!! http://www.yellowjersey.org/swiss.html America had a bicycle corps in our army that dates back to...the 1880's if I'm remembering history correctly. I don't know when it was disbanded, but it was probably long ago. We do have some special forces/ranger units that train with a quasi-military version of a mountain bike, but to the best of my knowledge these guys have never deployed with bicycles in the combat role. |
