I think Saturday will tell us something about Cunego. I know he said he is aiming for the worlds, but it will be interesting to see how he does in a flat time trial against the likes of Hamilton, Landis, Nozal and Gonzales to name a few. I think he will be a star for the long haul, but I don't know if his ITT will ever be more than average and will thus limit his chances in the Tour.

I think there is a strong possibility that Cunego's poor time trialing skills will be exposed. Yes, he is young and will undoubtedly improve, but he is still lacking in this department. Unless he can match the top time trialists then I don't see him winning the Tour. That said, he is an outstanding young cyclist but it could be that he develops into a Giro/classics rider rather than a Tour contender. Until he beats top quality tour riders rather than his ageing team mate Simoni and Gonchar and develops his time trialing skills then talk of him being a TDF candidate may be premature. |

That's a very smart move knowing that the crown is already taken but time is on his side. What will be very interesting to see is Tour 2006 with a brewing new crop of hungry youngblood for success.

no and possibly not any of the other grand tours either - Saeco are yet to be named as part of the Pro Tour and there's only one space left now! Not sure whether the organisers are still allowed invitation slots with the new format? |

Yes I know that Saeco will participate in Tour 2005, but Cunego already said that he will not..

He lost three minutes in the only time trial the Giro had. If there was another time trial, like most Giro's, he may not have won. It is difficult to win the Tour without excelling in the time trial. Pantani is the only person I can think of that won it as a pure climber. He is young though and has lots of resources available to become a better time trialist.
