Vehicle drivers have murderous intent or habits. 7. Automobile-derived sprawl has caused distances to "nearby" destinations to be too high. 8. Road maintenance is awful, too many flats due to potholes and debris. 9. Roads largely unsuitable for bikes (various reasons), and the best roads are closed to bikes. 10. Gas is too cheap to make them want to economize. 11. Television, computer and video game habituation eats the time that should be spent on exercise. 12. Most employers and stores have little or no provision for safe cycle parking; some actively discourage bikes. 13. Public transport is bike-unfriendly. Do they rely on cars because the commute long distances, or do they commute long distances because they rely on cars? Or is it a combination of both? IMO, to a certain extent it's both, but driven more by the 2nd one you list. Having a car and a good road system makes it very easy to pick where you want to live nearly independent on where you work. However, since most people want to live in less-crowded areas, it also puts them a long ways from places like grocery shopping, the hardware store, etc. Therefore they feel they can't realistically use any transportation other than the car to get to those other places they need to go. -- Remove the ns_ from if replying by e-mail (but keep posts in the newsgroups if possible). |

Too lazy to pump two wheels All of the above except #3, being fat is not a reason to avoid riding and is not a significant impediment to riding a properly fitted bike unless there are already significant other health problems such as ruined knees and hips. As we move toward an obese majority in the US we will probably worsen our urban planning decisions rather than improving them, designing the roads for our population of people disabled due to obesity. I use "disabled" as a literal rather than a legal term in this context. --Paul |

It's both, they choose to live in places where bicycle usage for commuting is impractical, and we design cities and suburbs to maximize convenience for cars at the expense of every other type of use. Often fear of living in cities contributes to the choice to live so far from work that a bicycle commute is impossible. Desire for extremely large homes is another reason. --Paul |
