Update...

Stage 5 - Almost lookin' like a real bike!
http://www.thehippy.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=54
('scuse the crap pix, poor light, rushed)

I've ridden it a little in its brakeless form but given that
I only know how to slow down and not stop, I think it
will sit idle until I sort out the braking issue.. the last thing
I want to do is bounce off a car before I've ridden 10k.

A present arrived in the mail today too.. all will be
revealed in due time (i.e. I forgot to photograph it).

From looking at your pics my guess is the problem with the brakes is a reach
issue due to you having 700C wheels in a fork designed for a 27" ones. Am I
correct?

I reckon if he dropped the blocks down to the end of the slots they'd be ok.
I'm guessing he's waiting for some colour co-ordinated brake cables, (black,
red or gold coloured), or he's waiting for someone to give him deliver some
brake levers. Since there's probably plenty of old levers lying in scrap
boxes he'd be reluctant to pay for new ones and half the fun is doing it on
the cheap.

We'll wait with baited breath for Hippy to give us the answer. He's hinting
at some sort of suprise too.

Ah ha.
On second thoughts, maybe it's not the reach of the calipers but the colour.
Check the comment under the pic.

I've also got one of these http://members.optushome.com.au/busted.jpg but
it's clearly seen better days. LOTS of skin lost that day.

Marty is definately on the ball!

Brake problems include:
- mainly, there's no brake cable installed = No braking!
- pads need to be moved down or longer calipers used
- not so nice looking calipers
- none of my spare brake levers look right or work right

Don't get too excited guys the surprise isn't THAT cool

Now that I think about it.. I should've got a black headset too. Stupid

Actually.. I haven't heard a peep from Dan about that.. I've got my
track bike's wheels on Vegemite at the moment so no biggie but I'll
chase him up about it sooner or later..

From my own experience with wanting to replace the 27" rims on my
fixie with 700C I found that even with the brakes shoes in the lowest
position on the calipers it just wasn't quite enough to correctly
reach the rim. My only reason for wanting to relpace the rims was
because in the wet polished alloy is not the greatest braking surface.
But with a fixie there are other means, as long as the chain don't
break, to stop or slow the bike so it was not a huge deal to stick
with the 27s.

My guess on hippy's surprise is Bullhorn Bars.

Geez. You could advertise that on ebay as "some small marks"

Nah - I'm gonna keep it as a reminder of my "Best Ever Crash"(tm) I
scored a night in hospital and a helicopter ride...:-) ( The first
of three heli rides in a nine month period - just a tad accident prone
for a while there...:P )

Other ways which I have yet to learn.. I mean, I can slow down, but I
wanna STOP or at least be able to lock the rear wheel. I've yet to check
if the pads will reach. If not, then 27's or longer calipers will find
there way onto the beast.

>My guess on hippy's surprise is Bullhorn Bars.

You PEEKED!! (Am I THAT obvious?)

Yes, I just took delivery today of a Profile Airwing "bullhorn" bar
which will battle it out with the Profile Stoker bar that arrived last
week for a place on the fixie.

I paid less than Suzy too, nyer nyer :P ;-)

hippy
- now has to find something "tricker" to impress...

I thought "bullhorns" was the generic name for any bars that look like
uh bullhorns

e.g. |___|

The Stoker bars are designed for a tandem but as far as I can tell they
are just another type of bullhorn bar. Both sets of bars look like the
beautiful drawing above but the Airwings are bent slightly differently,
in that the cross bar is not totally flat like the Stoker, the ends bend
towards the ground slightly.

Anyone else wanna stab at an answer?
