First ride of the season for us blokes in Southern Ontario. It's been
pissing rain and blowing snow for so long now we were wondering when Spring would finally arrive. Today it was 9 degrees and I planned to do an easy ride to see about fitness and trail changes. Got the bike, girl and car ready and headed off to the DVP trail. Did the upper stretch with no problems. Lot's of fallen trees and new single track that people made as a detour around them. Everything was going fine, well except for a major lack of fitness on my part, and I suspect a few extra pounds. Too much surf and turf, sushi, and french bread all Winter for sure. I get to the end of the upper trail and meet my girl in the parking lot at the bottom. Ya know...the usual how have you been, anything new, kiss there, feel there. 20 minutes later off to do the lower loop. We start out slow (she's not as confident on the lower part) and get about halfway. She's in front of me dabbing and I'm checking out her butt...(much better than I remember it last season, god I'm a lucky bastards!) when I hear a loud crack. Thinking it was a branch or twig, I keep riding until I notice the rear wheel is doing a crab-walk. I look down and I see this! http://members.rogers.com/jr.miller/interest.htm My swingarm is destroyed. Before anyone asks...no I don't do jumps or downhill, strictly XC. I've got too many bills and an 8 year old to keep in XBOX and Gamecube games to be risking time off work. I've ridden it about 1 1/2 seasons without a hitch. The girl rides on ahead to fetch the car, and a half hour later I'm heading home in disbelief wondering what it could have been like if that had happend on a fast descent. Anyway, luckily I have a spare swingarm. Just need a crank puller and I'm in business for a Saturday of singletrack bliss on the Oak Ridges Morain. Wonder if Jamis is gonna replace the part ??!! Well this will be a good test of the warranty/customer service of the company. |

That spring windfall is always an annoyance. A lot of stopping. Hope your crews are as good about cleaning them out as they are where I live. > I look down and I see this! > http://members.rogers.com/jr.miller/interest.htm Holy crap! I've never had an FS so I'm not sure, but that looks like something that should almost never happen. Good thing it happened on an easy section! > My swingarm is destroyed. How do you happen to have a swingarm of all things lying around? :-) > Wonder if Jamis is gonna replace the part ??!! Well this will be a good test > of the warranty/customer service of the company. > How do you happen to have a swingarm of all things lying around? :-) I'm just one of those dudes man...I think of the worst possible scenario and plan for it. When I bought the frame, I ordered a spare swingarm...just in case shit happens. Was beginning to think I had wasted my money, but now that I compare the new part with the old, I can see that the section that broke was much thinner on the old part. |

Meaningless comments: - Much humbler than I recall. ;-) Humility is a virtue. - Great pic at the top, but what are you dropping off of? Almost looks like you just "happen" to be perched on the front wheel! - Looks like your main interest is why that damned swingarm broke! (clicking on "Interests" links) - Nice page about the music. No mention of Billie Holliday? The pic on the top-left is awful fuzzy - camera next to the amp? :-) -- -BB- To reply to me, drop the attitude (from my e-mail address, at least) |

Hahahaha...how many people told you to stay away from Jamis when you were pimping the hell out of that frame? Cambria is having a sale on Titus frames, and you can get a Turner Burner from Supergo for under a grand. Tell that kid to forget videogames for a while - Daddy needs a new frame. At least you didn't hurt yourself. Don't tell Jamis that, though...tell them the failure caused you to wreck hard, and you ended up smacking your head against a rock and bruising your shoulder really bad. That way, they'll send you whatever their "team" frame is, which you can Ebay for a boatload, then apply said windfall to NRB (new real bike). Chris |

Well a buddy told me a few minutes ago that the Dakar Comps had a swingarm recall early in 2002. The part was snapping right where mine did whenever you were breaking hard. I usually don't ram on the brakes but today I recall now that my girl had to dab on one spot and I was caught off-guard and yank on the rear brake like a hack. Then again, I've riddent he fram two seasons almost and I'm sure I've had to reach for a handful before now. Oh well, I had a RM7 b4 and the swingarm gave me some issues, after that I always bought an extra swingarm so I don't miss weeks of riding waiting for a replacement part. |

The frame is awesome man, no complaints until now. But your damn right, I'm definitely getting a replacement at least without paying for it. I figure the frame has about 1 season left on it anyway, then I'm buying a Blur (ya ya...go ahead and rant on that one fellas. I rode one today and it's da shit!) |

If you look at the exposed surfaces, there might be a dark part and a light part - the dark part is what was already cracked (dark from oxidation and dirt) and light is the fresh crack. Like in the pictures of broken cranks at http://pardo.net/pardo/bike/pic/fail/FAIL-001.html Here's a particularly good shot of the light/dark feature: http://pardo.net/pardo/bike/pic/fail/FAIL-008.html |

Man, I hear you. My rides have hurt. Too much time on the couch, and never even cracked out the trainer. > > I get to the end of the upper trail and meet my girl in the parking lot at > the bottom. Now that's amazing. And you "just happened to have another?" That's almost equally amazing. paladin |

We were hitting the mid to high 90's two weeks ago and we were wondering why Spring was ending so soon. It has cooled off this week a bit, but soon the full-blown heat will arrive. Enjoy.
