You're my hero! I envy anyone who can get away with setting up the bike
stand in the living room. It's a fine accessory, but my wife seems to think
it clashes with the "decor" (with apologies to "Dan V")

Thanks...but to be honest, that was one of my rooms at my dad's house...the
whole upstairs was mine, so, you know, bikes and TV in one room, bed and
such in another.

Though, now that I have a house just off campus, my bikes are in the living
room about 6 feet from the kitchen. I can smell the rotten ass stinking mud
while I make breakfast.

I believe your setback is the "wife" quotient - college kids have no such
problem. Not that that's a problem, per se, but hey...usually it's the
woman or the ride. I'm in college - there are lots of women

Reality is for folks that can't afford hallucinogenics.

My sad reality is that this 6-speed shifter is truly a POS, having
neither the selector nub nor the 'tiny ball' to do its bidding. It has
but a crappy piece of plastic that slides along notches on the inside of
the shifter.

The answer?

Use the left-hand shifter on the right hand side, turned upside down.

Yeah, baby!

Now THAT's Frankenbike thinking. I like it.

When does it get fenders?

As soon as the good doctor can afford it.

I like to think it's a new era in shifters. I call it CrapidKludge.
Now if I could only get it in an 8-speed indexed version. . .

Those are like absolute entry level or department store
thumbshifters. But you probably knew that already. Regular
Deore or even Exage, etc, thumbies can switch to friction
and feel much more smooth. Around here you can sometimes
buy Deore 6-speed thumbies for about $15-30 at the flea
market, with an entire bike attached to them, of varying
quality and upkeep. 7-speed are rarer. If you find 7-speed
Shimano thumbies, they will shift 8 speed by going Beyond the
Final Click Frontier.

You are my freakin' hero! My recommendation was to use the garage door handle.

I meant I wish I could get a *left* shifter in 8-speed index. Then, I would
mount it upside down [as in said picture] for pure shifting joy.
