Default How to lose 5 minutes in 5 seconds

After watching Simoni's crash in the TTT, I realised that
the the new rules mean that a rider can lose huge amounts of
time if he gets dropped from his 5th man in the last few
meters. In other words, if your team is 2nd but 5 minutes 15
seconds back, then a 5 second gap from your team at the end
is worth 5 minutes.

Not exactly; the 1 km rule is still in place (fall in
last km -> same time as bunch). Simoni got the same time
as his team.

not in the results on letour.fr.

same with the Gerolsteiner tumblers.

and Garcia Acosta finishes 2 seconds behind IBB and this
costs him 45 seconds. Sastre 4 seoncds behind his team,
costs him a minute!

So if you get dropped by your team in the last1K, you have
to fall over to avoid losing time ?!!! Better still, imagine
getting dropped at 1.9 km, you've got to race to get within
the flamme rouge before the team crosses the finish line and
then lay the bike down as you cross the 1 km line. LOL!!!!

You're right. It's a clear "..or so I thought!" (and the
Eurosport commentators too). Saeco +1:30, Simoni +2:42,
poor bastard.

No -- the 1km rule gives you the time of the group you were
with when you fell. If you're solo, you don't get the time
of a group up the road.

Saeco must have thought the same. Why abandon your GC guy
otherwise? Had they waited for him, the crash would have
cost Simoni and the team nothing except team GC (although
they were close to beating E-E).

I said "dropped", as opposed to crashed in the lasts few
meters. As noted below, the correct strategy is to crash as
you get dropped.

This whole new TTT rule needs to be scrapped. All of the
teams need to select riders who can hammer at it.

Sorry, but the slacker team that finished 7 minutes down
over the course of just 40 miles...They all SHOULD get
tossed out for sandbagging.

The TTT is always conducted within the first 4 stages and is
always relatively short. No one should lose too much time if
they are halfway fit. If your team drops you, and you lose
lots of time, then blame your teammates for bad teamwork,
not the TDF itself.

Guys like Mayo need to get more serious about selecting
their rosters if they truly want to win the tour. There
are a great many riders who are not currently in the TDF
who would have been better choices for the TTT. Instead,
Euskaltel chooses to ship an entire crew of little
Spanish climbers each year to help tow bottles up to Mayo
on the Alpe.

Beforehand, where did you think Euskaltel would finish?
And how did they finish? Surprisingly well, for probably
about everybody. Especially after the disaster from the
day before.
