It was part of the Etape Du Tour - it's an organised event.
7000 cyclists starting at 7.00am : it's organised by the Societe du Tour de France.
It was bloody hard going (I posted a full diary of the event on the cycling training thread for those who want the gruesome details).

They talked a bit about the Etape Du Tour this morning on OLN. They showed some of the riders doing the stage and it looked absolutely brutal! I commend you for your effort! I'd love to try that just to see what a stage of The Tour would feel like. It may very well kill me though!

Botero is looking not so good on Stage 10. Not a positive indication for JU. In a post from before, I mentioned that Botero was telling people he wants to no longer cycle after this season, that he thinks he has a virus while his team doctors think it's "mental".

Meehs,

Thanks for this.

Yeah, the TV doesn't do justice to how difficult todays stage (Limoges-St Flour) is.
As I say if you get the chance to do it - you should give it a go, there's
plenty of support on the day and it is a good day out too.
But if you are going to do it - get in training.
I did 3000 miles since 17th March and I am glad that I did because I would have blown a gasket (and indeed I felt like I had blown a gasket !!)

Well, Bruyneel and LA didn't think Stage 10 important enough to the overall course to engage in reconnaissance in person by LA on it. So they guessed correctly that Stage 10, even though long, would not be important (the TH loss of 7" was a bonus, completely unanticipated). That's because, of course, the end of the stage is not along a mountain, among other things, making any gains relative to the peloton by a major GC contender difficult to keep.

Couple of things

1st congrats limerickman finnishing

I for the life me have no clue as to why T-mobile included Botero. His form has been horrible- even he admits he is 80%. Not sure what happened to him once he signed with Telekom, but it looks like big contract= easy life. While I never thought of him as overall GT winner he was certainly podium material.

I am a little surprised that Postal did not scope out this stage is this true Musette?

Nice looking Staffie Meehs

From thepaceline.com (for LA fans):

"On tomorrow’s marathon 237 km stage [LA]: 'It’s going to be tough. It’ll be the longest day of the Tour and it’s up and down all day. Unfortunately, it’s a stage we haven’t seen but I think we know the area OK. The finish we’ve seen – we did it in ’99 – so it’s somewhat familiar but it’s a hard day.'"

Elsewhere, there is an even more explicit statement LA hadn't done reconnaissance on it, maybe by Bruyneel. Don't have the time to find that second statement.

Thanks, interesting. It appears they made the right decision other than the tricky finish- watching the stage it appeared that there was a little too much flat/downhill before the end. I was hoping one of the climbers a little ways back would ty something- Mayo even Heras, but the finish was a little too far away from difficulties.
