For an alround track wheel what would be the better wheel between a pair of tri spokes or a pair of zipps?

depends what u mean by zipps what just the normal deep carbon rim with alloy hubs . i've ridden ti spokes and there a bugger i strong winds but nice in a velodrome. but there r rules that u can't run SOME tri spokes on the track. disc wheels r real responsive in velodromes whee there is no wind. my choice would be campagnoo bora track wheels.

campag dont make the "bora" in a track version. maybe the "pista" would be another option to consider? I personally run specialised/HED tri spokes and they are fast but are a little difficult to control if it gets windy. I haven't ridden with Zipps, but would imagine they would be similar speed and handling, maybe slightly easier to handle in the wind. As all round wheels i would be happy with either..........is cost a factor??? repairability? etc. Maybe leaning towards the Zipps especially if u live near an outdoor track.

Cost is a factor but theres a good secondhand market where i live so i should be right. I race both indoor and outdoor so i want a good alround set of wheels. Do tri spokes wind up fairly quickly or do u think id be better off with the zipps in that regard? Thanks for your help

I havent ridden Zipps personally but i did notice that my training/spare wheels (velocity aerohead [very light rim] and sapim CX-Ray spokes) did feel faster off the mark than my tri spokes, but once they were moving there was no comparison. The zipps would in my opinion be atleast as fast in acceleration compared with the tri spokes, losing out possibly (by a very small margin) in top end speed. Remember i havent ridden ZIPPS, but from experience the tri spokes are (very slightly) slower over a standing 200m than my lighter training/spare wheels.

I would be interested to know your final decision on the choice of wheels and your opinion on them compaired to others u may have ridden. Cheers mate.

I ride a zipp disc in back and a really stiff 28 hole deep dish wheel in front and love it.

Thanks. When u say deep dish in the front is that a zipp or another brand?

Got to ride a pair of 440s today. Had 240 gram conti podiums on which are 50 grams heavier than my usual tyre/tube setup. Found them to be roughly the same off the mark (maybe even a tad slower) than my velocity deep vs but once they got up to speed they were magic. Havent been focussing on the track so i didnt have the form to give them the justice they deserved. Ill get back to you when track starts again with a little bit of form behind me.

In the end I ended up buying a new pair of x-treme matrix elites. More than I had budgeted for previously but I had a good road season and managed to save up enough. 45mm deep so still aero but wont be affected by cross winds at the carnivals as much as the zipps would be. Only had one race on them so far which was state title scratch last thursday. Ended up second by about 15cm after a fella that we had let go earlier hooked the fella that I was overtaking for the win who then hooked me with about 80m to go, very peeved with that but nothing I could do about it. Wheels felt very twitchy after coming of high pressures which I suppose is to be expected. Acceleration was probably a tad better than my velocity deep v's but I havent ridden them enough to really tell yet (race was very boring tacticly). Top end speed was a lot easier to hold and I found that at times I had to slightly back pedal following wheels into the corners whereas Id normally just let the pedals do the pedalling if you know what I mean. Although irrelevant to some extent they ended up at 1800 grams including tyres lockring and valve extenders. 1400 bare. After christmas I'l be able to give you a proper run down on how they feel.

I'd send you a pic but I havent got a digital camera. If someone snaps me at the carnivals I'll send a pic. Scored a spot in the youth olympics to be held at dunc gray 18-23 january which includes a carnival on i think the 22nd so youll probably get a first hand look at them.

@rayner
do you have any problems with your x-treme matrix elites?
305 gr for Aero Rim is very light!

Theyre claimed to be 280g but I think 300-320 is more realistic. I havent ridden them enough to be able to give you a really good idea of what theyre like, but the only area that I'm still paying attention to is stiffness but I think thats still pretty good (got it in my head that light=flimsy but I think Im wrong this time). I think the ultimate durability test came a couple of weeks ago when I had a crash. I did ligaments in my shoulder and bent my frame, which going by how hard it was to bend back meant that the fall was quite hard (two guys and a vice to move back half an inch...). I thought the wheels were cactus bu the back didnt need touching and the front had two spokes pull out of the nipples. This surprised me a lot as I thought thered be a giant chunk of rim pulled out instead. Couldnt find any structural damage and there's no warping of the carbon, only a scuff on the protective plastic wrap bit but thats only cosmetic. I havent had a chance to run them since but I'll tell you if they collapse on me when I do. Overall very impressed and pleasntly surprised with the durability. I went for a 24-24 build which may have made a difference, road is 16-20.

I use a zipp 950 disc and a deep rim carbon wheel up front.

just been given a set of the old campy shamals too, they are so nice, proper 6day styleeeeeee!
nice, Ive been told that people buy them just for 'the wank factor' (excuse the reformed english), they any good apart from the shinyness?

they are very good, really good standard wheels and excellent for things like madisons where u dont want disc wheel.

i used them last night on the boards at newport in south wales. the track is just like sydney apparantly.
sounds good. Ive never ridden sydney (will be on tuesday) but ive ridden adelaide which is meant to be the same and thats good as. Here weve got a 287m track which is interesting with the longer straights but actually banked steeper than the 250m tracks ive ridden, pretty strange. glad you like your wheels
