Hi,

I was wondering what you guys think of the Specialized Epic, i have ridden road bikes for years and recently was thinking about buying a mountain bike. I did some research and talked to some of my riding buddies and I have come to the conclusion that this bike is a quality bike. I would be interested in hearing what you have to say about this bike because im going to be spending good money on it so please be honest

Thanks
Alex

Yes it definately is a quality bike. Do you have any idea of what you are looking for in a mountain bike though? Unlike road bikes where ride characteristics change relatively little in comparison, full suspension bikes vary greatly in how they perform. You have fully active suspension systems, semi-active, stable platform shocks and suspensions, etc. All of them vary in the characteristics of the ride feel and none is really better than the other. It depends on the type of riding and the riders style. I personally did not like the first generation epics at all but that doesn't mean you wouldn't.

It is a great bike. The Epic's crazy rear shock format is great for racing. That is so the bike acts like a hardtail until it hits the rough parts. It is a bike I would love to have. That and the TREK Elite 9.8.

That was precisely the problem and why it has never really cought on. People thought that it would be the holy grail of suspension bikes until they tried it and realized that they didn't want their full suspension bikes to feel like hardtails some of the time. Thats why its not a bike for everyone.

I purchased an Epic earlier this year (June). I have nothing but good things to say about it. I love how the rear suspension works. It only works when I need it to, I don't get any energy loss when I climb due to the suspension bouncing when I crank. I wasn't overly impressed with the Manitou forks that came with the bike. I had to upgrade to 03 SID's. To make a long story short, I love the bike and I'm sure you will also. Good luck with the purchase.

Yea i would mainly use this bike for XC and also getting around town, im sick of the traffic around our town so i want a bike that will haul butt plus something that i can take off road on the trails near my house.
