New bikes being built
I'm just putting together the best bike I can right now considering money restraints. I'd like to hear what other people would do in similar situations. It's tricky cause it's alot different than if you had massive funds ,but if you must be thrifty. You need to prioritize whats more important to you. I'm Building a 2002 Maverick ml-7 I bought second hand ...but this bike has never been built!! I'm amazed people could look at it and not be driven to give it a shot...well I have no such compunctions. I started out saying 1,000.00 was all I had to spend which proved impossible.
I then put one package together with many high quality components saving money on the wheels by getting xt disc hubs. Well this bugged me so finally I rewrote the entire order cutting corners on price trying not to affect the overall performance of the bike. This is what I came up with. A Black elite100/120 as a stopgap until I can afford the maverick fork. I got a deal on a new one for 250. I switched my answer carbon pro taper to a answer aluminum pre taperxc, I switched my Sram xo derailleur and gripshift to the new x9 derailleur and the 9.0 shorty shifter. ( the x9 is almost identical except for a titanium spring but better than the oribinal 9.0 offered) I switched from a racefacesignature ti bottom bracket to a signature xs with a modified DH cup to accomidate the e-type front derailler. I switched the raceface next LP for the LP. I went from mavic 3.1 UST to Mavic x317.Double butted spokes brass nipples and not sure what tire yet I started with the weirwolf but think I'll change that after reading some iffy reviews. I stuck with my thomson elite stem and seat post but dicovered (much like the bottom bracket that it need to be modified for use with the Maverick ( a 12 degree clamp). Avid ad7 brake levers and a selle italia genuine gel ti saddle. Avid mechanical brakes 160mm.They gave me some sram skewers for free. I think that about does it and as you can see, most aren't the best components as I would have wished but I think this bike should perform admirably none the less Oh yeah the reason for all the changes ...I now have Chris King ISO hubs rather than the XT I originally ordered. I kept coming back to how
important wheels are to overall performance and wanted these. What you see above are the sacrifices made to get there . I think I mad the right decisions I hope. Man the effort that goes into research and frugality is grueling. When my parts get here next week I'll take it up on Boggs mountain (in my backyard) and christin it, I'm very excited. Thanks for readin this thought maybe others were in similar situations and wonder what they came up with. I bought this impeecably clean frame Black anodized (which they don't do anymore for 1300.00 Including a very cool pump seatpost and front derailleur and owners manual which is really a recycled rubber dayplanner with some relevant sheets in the front , a sticker of authenticity and a hand signed thank you by paul turner himself. They only have limited production each year to devote the rest to designing. The frame is so georgious i wish I could figure out how to do a before and after picture. Ny parts group including pedals for 50.00 is 1691.00 aaaargh considerably more than I can afford but it was the absolute least amount possible. In the end I'd compromised already more than I'd wished.Hopefully in areas that won't adversly affect it's perform ance . The King hubs however should be able to perform much better than the xt disc. I've babbled enough but thats my bike , my new baby. And for a grand total of $2991.00 I think I did pretty good...we'll just see if I can pay the bills now lol actually not that funny but oh well I'll be shredding a proper bike, My first full suspension I might add. Id love to hear about other trips building your Dream or next best thing bike and how you like it.
Thank for reading this and have a great night , Vektor
