At the risk of sounding like that guy who figured the world would
never have need of more than 5 or 6 computers, why do we need 11 cogs?
10 is a nice round number and I was hoping it would be settled upon
for a while. This strikes me as somewhat like the whole Ultra-torque
business; different just to be different. The Ergos do look quite
nice, er... I don't mean they look nice, I mean they look very
functional and well designed. But I must say I've had it with special
accomodations for mani piccole! Lets have some for mani grande!

Need is a strong word, but here's why I would like it

UT was a response to the misconception that square taper cranks and
BBs were somehow flawed, and the market shunned them because of the
media fawning over all new and different. BUT at least it's a better
design than all the other 'spindle thru with left crank arm bolted on'
designs.

Try to look at image 6. There seems to be a shim for people with big
hands:
"Per le mani grandi è disponibile anche un supporto che permette
maggiore appoggio"
Or picture 4:
"Presa migliore per le mani grandi: questa è la mano di Indurain!"
Interesting to see that not only Super Record but also Chorus and
Record will be 11 speed.
I was hoping that the 2009 series would re-introduce a "silver" Record
hub, but from all the black and dark gray parts I see on the pictures,
my hope is fading.

Campagnolo has gone completely over the top. Looks like I'll be switching
most of my stuff over to Shimano 9-speed with barend shifters.

Why? Centaur and below will still be 10 speed, and the Veloce series
doesn't have any carbon in it, if that is what bothering you.
Regarding Shimano; from 2009 Shimano will start to ship Dura Ace
shifters and derailleurs that are incompatible with "old" Shimano
systems (new cable pull ratio like Sram's shifters). Ultegra and 105
will follow soon after. So in a near future only Sora/Tiagra
derailleurs will work with 9 speed bar end shifters, and after a
couple of years they too will be upgraded. So 9 speed Shimano is a
dead end.

you can achieve more strength [and stiffness] for less weight with a
large hollow tube than you can a small [solid] rod. basic math.

You could achieve the same thing with a 12-23 8 speed against a
compact double. Smaller, stronger cassette, against a front
derailleur, shifter, and chain ring...

Funny I didn't bother reading the caption on that one. When I first
saw it, I thought, gee look how small the levers are even for one of
those Caisse d'Epargne twerps!

Just to PO Campagnolo? They OFFER 11 speed, they don't put a gun to your
head to buy it.

Basic physics: if you twist the ends of a pop can it goes smooshy
smooshy. Not so with a piece of rebar. Next...

Do the levers whistle at high speeds? Can you tune those slots?
It's a semi-serious question, given that helmets whistle sometimes...

Torsional strength-to-weight increases for a tube as the wall thickness
decreases, up to the point when buckling happens at the same time as
yield. Stiffness-to-weight in the elastic range continues to increase,
but is useless if the required strength isn't there. The pop can's wall
thickness is far too small for optimum strength-to-weight, while the
rebar, with zero inner diameter, has far too thick a "wall".

Dear Derk,
Hmmm . . . 39x28 = 53x38
If we move the front 39-tooth sprocket to the rear cluster and use a
really long-cage derailleur, how many rear cogs will we need to
eliminate the front derailleur and return to the elegant simplicity of
the 5-speed Schwinn of my childhood?
Cheers,

actually, up until buckling, the torsional stiffness of the soda can is
much higher. if you don't want it to buckle, make the can walls
thicker. basic math. next...

I for one, am happy that Xenon and Mirage are gone with a definite
delineation between 'high end' and 'mid end'. Like Mercedes and
Porsche found out with the mistakes of the baby Benz and 814 'Volks
Porsche'.
About $2500 for Super Record, lots of dough but on par with DA 7900
and only a few bucks more than 'Red', which seems old fashioned by
comparison.

'Semi' serious?..how many Treks will come with Super Record Mike, how
about 11s Chorus. Trek is missing the boat with the very high end. We
will be putting Super Record onto Parlees, no doubt about it and
Record and Chorus onto Moots and Lynskeys. Campagnolo and OEM, even at
the very high end, is something that Campagnolo doesn't speak very
well but if the 2 bog boys want it, it would happen. Too many sweet
heart deals with shimano and sram.

Peter: I wasn't saying it was a bad thing. Just a thing. You look at those
slots and you're thinking "Flute." Or at least I did.
And you're right, Campagnolo loses out at the high end because they, as you
say, don't "speak" OEM very well. I agree that that's very unfortunate.
