Okay, well here is the situation:

I pretty much have a Campagnolo 10 spd drivetrain....My derailleurs and crank are all 10 speed Campy Chorus. My question is this: I have been using my 9spd Campy Chorus shifters for a while now along with a 9spd Chorus 12-23 cassette and this setup is compatible with my 10 spd parts. Since money is an issue right now, I would likely get the Chorus 10 speed shifters first and then the cassette. With some tweaking, will the shifters work with a 9 spd cassette? Please remember that this is only a temporary situation...to get the cassette and shifters at the same time would cost me a fortune.

not really....they'll be ok in the middle gears, where you set them up and skippy at the edges....plus the chain is too fat for the sprockets....Cassettes don't cost much really when compared with the shifters. Why not get a cheaper (e.g. xenon) cassette for the time being.

Since most of your riding is apparently in the flat LA Basin & because "money is an issue right now" you have to answer the question (for yourself) as to WHY you are making a change from 9-speeds to 10-speeds ...

Is this a cosmetic change? Nothing wrong with that ... you just have to realize that the extra cog probably isn't going to be a "real" benefit.

Now, I haven't tried this, so it may not work ... you MAY be able to get adequate indexing on a 9-speed Campagnolo cassette when using a 10-speed shifter if you attach the rear derailleur cable at the 9 o'clock postion instead of the "normal" 6 o'clock position -- the alternate anchoring will change the indexing. The little "pressure plate" may vary from derailleur to derailleur, so it may be easier to do with some derailleurs than others.

Let us know the results if you try it ... OR, if I get motivated to try it, I'll report back.

FWIW. If you are compelled to making the change, I recommend that you wait until you can pony up for the shifters, cassette & chain at the same time.

I think that I will keep things the way they are for the time being....no sense in messing with something that already works for me. Of course it would be nice to upgrade, but it is not realistic at this point anyway....I derive no real significant benefit from this. Thanks for your feedback.

Going from 9 to 10 speed is not, by itself, an upgrade.

Thanks to all for their replies. I have decide to leave well enough alone, for now. I cannot imagine myself spending an extra $400 - $500 to upgrade my levers, chain, and two cassettes. It just doesn't seem to be worth it.

I think you're right on. People I know who have run both say its a very, very minor change at best, and don't recommend changing unless you have a compelling reason to do so - like a new bike that comes with it, or when your 9 sp. shifters wear out.
