Lemmiwinks in Canberra hospital

Hi all, I'm Mrs BT Humble, who is out of the country at this time.
I'm just passing on some news about Lemmiwinks, who I think posts
here. He had a bicycle fall on Saturday that cost him his right
shoulder and right hip. He had surgery yesterday involving several
large pins in both joints and is now recovering in Canberra hospital,
Woden.

He's not been allowed out of bed yet. At this stage it looks like
he'll be there for a couple more days, but he's not getting a
consensus from the various surgeons involved.

He's up for three non-load-bearing months; basically even in a couple
of months when he can put weight on his leg he won't be able to walk,
and with the shoulder out too he won't be able to use crutches. When
he gets home he'll be house-bound for some time. You probably get what
this means for his cycling, and how he's going to feel about that.

He's in ward 9B, doesn't have a phone, and has to keep his mobile
turned off. He's quickly running out things to do so he'd definitely
be up for visits from locals and any news from anywhere.

You might be able to sms him; Ms L takes his phone out and checks it
occasionally, or if you want to send him a message post here and I'll
get it through to him.

Would that accident have anything to do with a guy in a ute who ran into
some cyclists in Canberra and didn't stop?

One of the guys who i am in touch with down there in Canberra was telling me
about it as he was riding in this group although he was further behind and
luckily not involved but was telling me about the guys who were hit.

Give him our best regards and hope he has a successful recovery.

That was the Friday Vikings group from the ANU, which Bean usually
rides in but was having a sickie. Riding along in the bike lane and
the ute drives up next to the bunch, swerves into the bike lane
knocking three off, then drives away. The worst off had his forks cut
right out from underneath and went straight onto his face - he has
fractures and no recollection of what happened, but he was out of
hospital by the evening so is doing OK relative to what it could have
been. Who knows what was going on in that ute - whether he was trying
to give the bunch a scare and got it wrong or was answering his phone
or what. A witness eventually returned and the bloke handed himself in
about two hours later, I think (probably after a phone call to the
lawyers).

Best wishes to L and family - hospitals are not fun places to be in.

Oh Poo! Thanks for the news Mrs BT. I sold Lemmi my panniers a few years
back... was it you I met 'when the deal went down'? Anyway, I hope to
hell the young fella's healing up. Send him my fondest.

I confess I am confused - Is Lemmiwinks BT Humble?? I did not think so, but
one way or the other, I am very sorry for whomever of them as he they
(both?) post informative enlightening commentary.

I hope he fights back to cycling status sooner than expected.

Sorry - I will pay more attention in future.

Also, I have to say that reading the troll input makes me very sad for the
future if they are as young as they sound.

No, Lemmiwinks has bikes that are slightly newer than BT's. Powered
and unpowered....

And the powered ones have a few more cc's.

Oh and BT's the one into the blue girly drinks.

Hi Bean, yes I was among those who invaded your home. He sure loves
those panniers. I think BT covets them also. Actually I do too.

Two different cycling nuts.

Last word was: Lemmiwinks is awaiting a helicopter transfer back to
his hometown, where they've arranged a month in hospital for him.
This is great as it will keep him as still as possible for as long as
possible and reduces the risk of him having another fall or incident
that would put his recovery back, and it also gives Ms Winks some time
to get the place set up for temporarily imposed immobility.

Sass... can you tell us what exactly happened and where? There've been a
few nasty accidents of late.

Okay I was trying to avoid saying because it's a bit, well...

I think it went... doing about 15 in a smooth car park, no other
traffic, moved or reached out to handles in some way, misjudged
distance, overbalanced. Not really dramatic, not life threatening,
not permanent, full sick leave to cover it; just a bummer.

Ouchies... on the pride too! Much prefer the old 'was riding in a bunch
heading down into Uriarra Crossing at ~75 kph when the rear hub seized
and I flew over the handle-bars and landed in the dry river-bed...'

It's sweet of you to say, but no, we are separate entities. Mr & Mrs
Lemmiwinks had driven down to Canberra from Armidale to attend the
Unaugural, but due to this unfortunate mishap were unable to attend.
I'm presently in Suva.
