1. Road racing involves a lot of sprinting to win races. Why do you have to care about track cycling to be a good sprinter?

2. I don't understand the argument that Americans are understandably poor at sprinting because 99.9% of Americans don't care about track cycling.

That to me is like answering the hypothetical statement that Americans are relatively poor at math by saying that 99.9% of americans don't care about math...

I wasn't trying to NOT make your argument Jono, but in reading the thread it sure looks like you've done a lot of rebutting. ;) I was explaining to you the reason BEHIND the situation.

Tell me something Jono. How many ice rinks do you have in Oz? And, within those ice rinks, how many ice hockey teams do you have there? Afterall, I'm sure there's a huge interest in ice hockey in your tropical climate there. Why don't you guys bring one of your hockey teams on over here so we can beat the shit out of them and then brag about it. I know I for one felt awesome when the US (and just about every other country competing) beat out the Jamaican bobsledders in the Olympics. (And, btw, I was being facetious there. I actually cheered for the Jamaicans and hoped they'd win. If you bring your hockey team here, I'll cheer for them too. ;) . You know what would be really cool is if you, thunder and classic could take the sport up real quick and join the team and come on over and play. I'd be conflicted on who to cheer for under those circumstances, but it'd make a great game I bet. :D )

TDL, thanks for your gentlemanly response.CG, the aussies have plenty of ice rinks. The difference is their men don't play hockey, they figure skate.

Ok, this is getting too deep. It goes like this,

Step 1- Classic1= You are all shit at sprinting blah blah blah race track more to get better blah blah blah

Step 2 C'girl= *childish tone* yeh well we don't care about track so nahhhh *childish tone*

the only point I was trying to get accross is that in a shit talking match what kind of a response is it to say, "yeh but we don't care" For gods sake at least think of something insulting...

You know, C, if they want to be proud of their Aussie sprinters...let'em. Poor blokes..what else have they got? I mean they don't even have the croc guy, what's-his-name, anymore. :(

:D
Come on now NNS, they still have Captain Feathersword. Thunder moonlights as him ya know. ;)

Jono, I gotta tell ya. Seriously dude. I didn't really think much of you, until your last coupla posts here. You're growing on me man.

I'm not going to get into the "substance" (or lack thereof) of the debate anymore because I think the pot was stirred enough and the horse is done dead already. Anything else would no longer be funny because we're at the point of diminishing return.

But I give you credit man. You definitely made me laugh, with all 3 of your last posts. Lol laugh, so props to you dude. ;)

2. I don't understand the argument that Americans are understandably poor at sprinting because 99.9% of Americans don't care about track cycling. If a larger fraction of population care about a certain sport, it means that a larger number of people will try to train to become the "sports hero", which implies a higher chance that you can put together a team of good talent. If there is no interest, then the pool to choose from becomes small, and it is much harder to get a good team.

That to me is like answering the hypothetical statement that Americans are relatively poor at math by saying that 99.9% of americans don't care about math... :confused:I think it really is true. Ok, not 99.9%, but it is a high number. :p

Apologies for taking a thread meant for humor off on an uninteresting tangent.

Yes, it's true. Americans suck at everything. (That's called sarcasm boys). That's why everyone else obsesses about how much we suck at everything. I mean, afterall, it IS human nature to obsess about those that suck and are no competition for you. That's clearly a logical conclusion to be drawn. (That's more sarcasm).

For example, I'm pretty sure that Manny Ramirez spends all of his time obsessing and whining about how much the no-name guy that can't make the Big Leagues sucks at all aspects of baseball and the NFL fans collectively spend their time not talking about the Patriots. Oh no, their time is instead spent continually harping on how it is that the Cleveland Browns suck.

I wonder why it is that, in reality, we actually do spend most of our time whining about the NY Yankees or the Detroit Redwings sucking.

No, clearly you're right. I see your points now. (more sarcasm)

Oh, it wouldn't be economics. Can't be. No way. They don't teach economics over here. What is it anyway? I think I pulled that term of art from some football commentary or something.

You wanna know economics? Here's all you need to know. You got your beer, and you got your pizza. It's all about supply and demand man. There. Class is over. Now go drink your beer and eat your pizza.

(NNS, did you take that a-hole's Economics class at MU? God, what was his name? I've blocked it out of my memory on purpose. Walter something . . . ? Anyway, if you did, then you get my joke. ;) )

I took the one where all the multiple choice questions on the exam had 10 possibilities (A and C; B and D; A, B, and F...) and by the time you finished reading it you forgot what the friggin question was... I guessed a lot...got a B...

Then there was Sociology where every example the prof gave started with...let's say you and your friends were smokin some pot....
