Comments aside...I'm considering upgrading from an STX-RC rear derailleur to XT. Yes...8 speed (i know...).
Any thoughts on how it will effect shifting performance? If it's strictly a weight advantage, I'll stick w/ the STX.

If your STX RD is worn at the bush or pivots, then any new Shimano RD will improve shifting pretty much equally. If your STX RD is not worn, then you will notice no shifting difference going to XT, or XTR for that matter. 8spd is less sensitive to wear on the RD, in any case. I had an old, worn Deore DX RD that shifted perfectly with 7spd (same spacing as 8spd), but was a dog with 9spd.
