I've heard of some protein called casein which is slowly consumed by the body, making it ideal to eat before bed-time, to get better recovery.
So is this the case or is it something that might speed up recovery by 1% if I'm lucky?
Well I'm just a bit sceptic about all those great nutrition products available ;-)
Casein is in milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese. And yes, the protein is absorbed much more slowly than other proteins such as those in whey. This is due to its tendancy to agglutinate in the stomach I believe. So overnight, it will metabolize more slowly, providing a more steady supply of amino acids to your tissues.
The main point I'll make though, is that it is plentiful in natural sources, and your wallet is probably better off by stocking up on some chocolate milk and lowfat cottage cheese/yogurt if you want to up your intake. Enjoy that dairy! http://cyclingforums.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

The connection between cancer and casein is worth looking into before you supplement. I use whey protein in skim milk and an REM tablet and sleep like a baby. As far as recovery, I have a hard time putting together rides close enough to need quick recovery.

Just curious as to what an REM tablet is, do you take one every night or just after training/riding?

REM is from ProLab and contains white willow bark, L-Leucine, L-Isoleuicine, L-Valine, Valerian extract, and melatonin.
Basically some amino acids and a small amount of a sleep aid.
I usually sleep well so I take it only after a training day.
netrition.com sells it I believe.
Many, myself included, are allergic to Casein.
