Sram shifters and Shimano

My left shifter has more-or-less died.....and I can get SRAM stuff at a team discount.

So: can SRAM shifters be used if everything else on the bike is Shimano? Can I just swap them out, adjust and go?

Just curious -- how much will that LEFT SRAM shifter cost you at your "team discount" other than some possible aggravation of a possible, brief period of incompatibility?

Why don't you just replace the Shimano shifter with a Shimano shifter OR, as some have done, a Campagnolo shifter which is known to index with any front derailleur?

Let us know how compatible-or-not the SRAM shifter you end up getting is with your Shimano front derailleur ... the worst thing that can happen if you get a new Rival/Force-or-RED shifter is that you'll have to pony up for a new front derailleur, too.

BTW. It is my (obviously, limited) understanding that the trim on the Rival/Force is apparently on the inner ring ... and, on the outer ring with the RED ... something which you may-or-may-not want to consider when choosing between the shifters.

Sram road shifters are NOT compatible with shimano derailleurs, front or rear.
So if ya get Sram shifters, you need Sram derailleurs. Might look at Campagnolo. MUCH less than Sram, add a Campag rear derailleur, then go ride and not have a lever die anymore w/o the ability to repair.

That's what I would have thought since SRAM seems to have gone out of their way to make everything as proprietary as possible. Can you say "proprietary" and NOT conjure up the notion of a multitude of "orphan computers" that are filling garages/attics/landfills?

Am I still the only one who appreciates that un-heralded capability?) ... as I mentioned elsewhere, by my reckoning, you should be able to use your Shimano rear derailleur with a 10-speed ERGO rear shifter (when you have to cross-that-bridge) with almost any cassette if you don't want to spend a lot of money up front.

I failed to mention that I'm using 105 9 speed.

I'll just get a used set of 105 or ultegra shifters off of Ebay. This is just a commuter bike anyway, so I don't want to spend too much on it.

NOT compatable.I know, it's hard to believe ... but, the 10-speed Campagnolo ERGO shifters in tandem with a 9-speed Shimano rear derailleur can index to either an 8-speed Shimano cassette (and, 8-speed Campagnolo cassette which has close-enough to the same cog spacing) & to a 9-speed Shimano cassette using the hubbub.com alternate rear derailleur cable anchoring:

My quickie test indicates that the 10-speed Shimano rear derailleur can be substituted for a Campagnolo rear derailleur ...

The ALTERNATE Shimano rear derailleur cable anchoring lets you use a 10-speed Shimano rear derailleur as a 9-speed rear derailleur ...

By extrapolation, since I don't have a 10-speed Shimano cassette, using the hubbub.com anchoring with a 10-speed Shimano rear derailleur & Campagnolo 10-speed ERGO shifters should yield 10-speed Shimano cassette indexing.

Of course, the Campagnolo 10-speed shifter works with a 10-speed Campagnolo 10-speed cassette ...

But, for the OTHER Campagnolo indexing, it is better to use the proper shifter.

Not true. I have used Campagnolo 10s ERGO and RD with many shimano 9s cogsets and chains. The difference between ctr cog to ctr cog is less with Campag 10s and shimano 9s than with Campag 10s and shimano 10s(which doesn't work all that well).
