The Italian Olympic Committee have requested that a two-year long doping ban be given to 2007 Giro D'Italia victor Danilo Di Luca.
The ban must be rubber-stamped by a sporting judge and refers to a doping test Di Luca took after the 17th stage of last year's Giro.
CONI made the surprise announcement after months of wrangling over whether Di Luca's results from the test last May had broken any doping rules.

Does that meant that he'll be stripped of the Giro title?

Does that meant that he'll be stripped of the Giro title? It doesn't say but I don't see how he can't be if Flandis was stripped of the 2006 Tour title. Maybe that rubber stamp will bounce and he'll get off with it?

Mazzoleni is in for it as well: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/22012008/58/calls-mazzoleni-year-ban.htmlLeaves last years Giro podium looking aweful shakey dope wise.

Woo hoo! Andy Schleck wins. Simoni third, or maybe he is second if Eddy M.'s results are tossed.
This year's Giro will be very interesting without DiLuca.

This year's Giro will be very interesting without DiLuca.Simoni might finally get his third Giro? That would be one hell of a way to bow out of the sport.

If Di Luca gets tossed what's the hit count on the Grand Tour winners for the past several years then?
Taking the 2007 Vuelta and 2007 TDF out of the discussion it looks pretty bad for anyone winning a Grand Tour and staying above suspicion. Heck, if you put "suspicion" in, Menchov and Contador can be included too.

Well, let's have a look:
2007 Denis Menchov (Rus)
2006 Alexander Vinokourov (Kaz) known doper
2005 Roberto Heras (Spa) subsequently the title was stripped from him and went to Menchov
2004 Roberto Heras (Spa) known doper
2003 Roberto Heras (Spa) known doper
2002 Aitor Gonzalez (Spa) known doper
2001 Angel Casero (Spa)
2000 Roberto Heras (Spa) known doper
1999 Jan Ullrich (Ger) known doper
So that's 7/9 For the Vuelta.
The TdF doesn't get much better.
2007 Alberto Contador (Spa)
2006 Floyd Landis (USA) known doper
2005 LA (USA) By now, who does he think he's kidding?
2004 LA (USA) Various
2003 LA (USA) Positive
2002 LA (USA) Tests
2001 LA (USA) All been covered up
2000 LA (USA)
1999 LA (USA)
1998 Marco Pantani (Ita) known doper
1997 Jan Ullrlich (Ger) known doper
1996 Bjarne Riis (Den) known and confessed doper (a rarity ey?)
So, potentially 11/12 for the TdF, 12/12 if the puerto alegations can be made to stick on Contador.
Giro fairs slightly better
2007 Di Luca (Ita) known doper
2006 Ivan Basso (Ita) known doper
2005 Paolo Savoldelli (Ita)
2004 Damiano Cunego (Ita)
2003 Gilberto Simoni (Ita)
2002 Paolo Savoldelli (Ita)
2001 Gilberto Simon (Ita)
2000 Stefano Garzelli (Ita) known doper (masking agent, 2002 Giro)
1999 Ivan Gotti (Ita)
1998 Marco Pantani (Ita) known doper
1997 Ivan Gotti (Ita)
4/11 isn't so bad by cyclings standards, but for any other sport there would be a massive scandal. Guess that shows how low cycling has sunk. Total dope rate is 25/32. Damn that's bad.
Still, some people do seem to have recognised this, and we can only hope for a better future.

Angel Casero-Operacion Puerto cyclist.Yup Gotti was forced to retire in disgrace. He is not talked about much anymore. That and his rather public spats with Pantani have done little to endear him to the Italian cycling public.

Very interesting list : when you consider that other known dopers like Zulle, Virenque (both Festina) didn't win a GT during the years you've listed - the evidence is even more damning.

2 Year Ban For Di Luca
I'm curious as to the details on DiLuca's suspicious blood profile. As I understand it, he is not being busted for a specific banned substance, but rather suspicious hormone levels (but presumably not abnormally high testo). I remember reading about several riders showing hormone levels one would normally expect to see in a small child, but what does that mean? Abnormally low T/E ratio?
Bro Deal
2 Year Ban For Di Luca
Didn't the original reports say there were several riders with suspicious hormone levels? Was that wrong or is DiLuca the only one to take the fall?
