Avanti Vuelta for $600, is this a good buy?

I am looking to go from MTB to Road and i have no clue when it comes to Road.
A friend of a friend has an Avanti Vuelta 05 for sale for $600 and has sent me an e-mail with the following;

"As I mentioned by bike was a special edition when I bought it, and it is called an Avanti Vuelta. It has the same specs as the 2004 Avanti Corsa, which include, 9 speed Shimano ultegra running gear, and Shimano R550 wheels. It has carbon folks and stays, and seat post, and I currently have tri bars on the front, with a speedo. It is blue in colour, and I will get it serviced before I sell it. Not sure what it is worth, I think around $600 would be fare."

Ive been trying to do some net research on the model and have not come up with much.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me (model/price opinion...anything), Id be very greatful...would hate to end up with the wrong bike.
