Quality cycling shops in Melbourne?
Cycling shops in Melbourne seem to have staff that are unqualified young people as the salesman. I am looking for a store with an experienced expert in cycling and actually gives you a fitting of the bike that suits you.

Which stores fit this description?

I was thinking of specialist shops that do custom fittings and so on.

I was thinking of specialist shops that do custom fittings and so on.

Plenty do fitting, but I wouldn't recommend a single one of them to do it.

Kennedy CycleFit - Black Rock
Beasley Cycles - Footscray (actually if I was to recommend based on others suggestions this would be it)
TFM - Chapel St, Praharn
SHM - CBD (use fit kit, rather than your body mechanics on the bike)
Cycle Science - Mitcham (partially recommend as well)

and many more... bicycle fit is an evolving beast. It isn't something that is set and forget. As you improve in flexibility, your fit will evolve. If you stop cycling or get injured and you flexibility decreases your fit will devolve.

There is no science, there is no "one true path", there is no "one size fits all" for bicycle fit.

There is little point (in my opinion) in bicycle fit if you are not willing to have clip in shoes and pay for some parts replacement (stems, saddles, seat posts, handlebars, etc) when starting with an off the shelf bicycle.

Well there's 'fitting' meaning 'which one of the two bikes that we have in stock from the two brands we carry fits you', and then there's 'fitting', meaning physiology and bike ergonomics.

Of the latter, we use John Beasley, but he's up to his neck in Beijing preparation at the moment, so your chances of getting in are slim to none unless you know the secret handshake.

Of the former, I have no idea. I'm the wrong guy to ask. Haven't bought a bike from a bike shop since 1989.

Why wouldn't you recommend any oen of them? Wouldn't it be better than nothing?

As for my current road bike, I feel I am uncomfortable stretching down to the low handle bars (the curl part). A sign that the bike dosen't fit me? Maybe I need to reduce by stomach?

I realise there is no single correct answer but would like to get the best approximation as possible. i.e. I like the way Athlet's foot use a specialist system to determine the shoe for you. It's not the only way but at least it's better than nothing.

Why Beasley Cycles in particular? Where do you get the recommendations from?

Bingo... Not a cycling shop, but a person with an eye towards your bodies mechanics...

http://www.topbike.com.au/physio.htm <-- I went to Emma Colson to fine tune my fit and solve some physical deficiencies i was having a while back.

So you can't reach your drops comfortably. Could be reach, flexibility, core strength, saddle positioning, etc...

Too bad she dosen't sell bikes? I assume you go to her after having bought the bike? It's not so bad as you can buy the closest one to your needs then she fine tune it even more.

friends, acquantances, known local frame custom designers, John Beasley's own success with Malaysian cycling team, Australian cycling team, etc, etc...

So you have a current bike.... why not make that fit? IOS, Emma Colson, and other non-cycle shops can assist in making it work if it is a suitable frame size.

I never said it did. Never had a problem in the first place. Just wanted to find the bike that fits best or within an appropriate range.

So there is something wrong with your current bike that demands a new bike?

In short - go to Cycle Science in Mitcham.

A shop specialising in road bikes is a rarity. Any other shops in Melbourne that sells only road bikes?

Beasley doesn't stock just road bikes.

The only one that did as far as I know was Rouler in Abbotsford... went out of business.

It's a worry when I've never rode my road bike in the forward grabing position, that is holding the curl because it seems too far away and my stomach gets in the way.

What about Beasley's Cycles?

But maybe not where it offers high quality services like good fitting. The last one I went to, they just got me stand over a few bikes.

overweight and can't reach the drops... sounds more like a Kennedy's kind of client. :D

As Thylo said earlier... Beasley has his work cut out for him doing other things at the moment.
