broken seat post, give me back my alloy

went for a cruisy ride today and hit a small bump in the road,as soon as my ass hit the seat i heard a crack and the next thing i noticed my carbon seat post was broken, 20km from home, NICE:eek: now this was proberly due to the clamp being overtight because i noticed the pinch marks on the post.now i know carbon is the latest and greatest but for the average club rider i think i want back my alloy post so i can rest easy when i do the clamp up.the post was a bontrager done about 2000km adjusted twice to the torque spec but it moved around so i give it another 4nm just to stop it moving.i weigh 83 kg just incase you think i'am a fat bastard so i dont think that was the problem.
any one had a similar thing happen,oh by the way my legs are sore from riding home with no seat and my ass is stil in one piece no carbon spinters, thank god:)

The worst that ever happened to me was a RD cable broke. It was embarassing to get passed by kids on Wally World bikes as I was stuck in 1st or 10th gear (9-speed setup). I personally leave all the carbon goodies to the good people who compete, except for the carbon fork that came with my 2003 Raleigh. I grew up with steel and raced aluminum in my day and these two highly dependable materials are good enough for my riding. Now I don't begrudge anyone from using carbon fiber stuff if they want it, but I don't think that it would really change my quality of life if I used it.

Read the part where you overtightened by 4 N-m.

I have had an aluminium post break and have seen several others break.
Some have broken at the top of the frame and others have split at the top of the post where the seat clamp is pressed in.
Only one of these was ridden by a fat bastard and most were on mountain bikes.

Yup. I watched a girl crash one day when her aluminum seat post broke.

I often wonder if mine will break as it has one of those zert inserts to "take vibration and shock" :rolleyes: away from the rider, and i wonder if it hurts the strength of the tube, and causes it to break easier

It's so hard for me to ride now. After my surgery, any seat I try makes my scar tissue hurt like a mother. Last I tried, my seat post broke, but luckily it was only about a quarter mile from my home. I hate to admit, but I am rather large now due to my obesity. It's because of my surgery. I swear.
