Fold-up sit-mat?

Since 2001, over 90,000 cyclist's have joined Cycling Forums to discuss topics from general cycling to equipment, training, racing and travel or vacation destinations (especially in europe during the tour de france). We also feature an great deals in our online store, 100's of articles, classifieds and product reviews.

Can anyone recommend a good fold-up sit-mat.
I'm sure I could find one in most outdoor shop for not very much money,
but a recommendation would be nice.
Doesn't have to be loadsa dosh(*), but it is for an Xmas present.
Recipient of gift is the one who always closes up pack, stands up to
start walking again, then curses cos they've forgotten to put their
sitmat in their pack. I'm looking for one of those fold-up ones that
you can put on the outside of your pack.

(*): I have a A4-sized bit of foam (think it came with an edition of one
of the walking mags as a freebie a very long time ago) which is still
doing the task quite nicely.

Seriously though, I know somebody who has lost several cheap foam
sitmats to windy conditions when forgetfully standing up.

A bit of string that ties the mat to the bag has been
found to be a reasonably cheap and pretty reliable
solution ;-)

I made several sit mats which fold, out of a roll of exercise mat.

If you're feeling particularly energetic when you get
to the top of the hill you can indulge in a very small
session of aerobicise.

......but think of the extra weight !

I have to admit to having used a plastic bag (Tesco I think) as a mat
which flew like a kite when I got up. It was retrieved though - by a
friend of the earth :-)

Or take an ordinary one, cut through most of the way and hinge with
duct tape.

Cheepskate solution

I will however take on board the blow-away hazard which hasn't
befallen me yet, but will surely do so now that I've been told about
it!

I use 2 layers of 250mm square foam backed foil radiator insulation,
held together with duct tape round the edges. Works well, and is cheap
and light.

you could use some carbon fibre instead of the string.
