Severn Bridge

Hi,

Probably not the usual walking haunt for people, but I was wondering if
anyone here had any experience of walking around the Severn Bridge
area? I would like to take some photos of the second bridge, but I am
having difficulty finding information on the web as to the best place
to park, and the safest place to be while still being able to get a
decent shot. Mainly I want to do some timelapse, so the tide times
would be an issue.

Anyone any suggestions?

Walking around Clifton and the old suspension brdieg is supposed to be very
nice, not that I have been but have heard.

It is very nice, especially Leigh Woods, from which I saw someone fall
almost the whole height of the Avon gorge before the rope stopped him!

I've also cycled across the old Severn Bridge, leaning at an angle of 45
degrees into the wind... :-)

Cycling in that area is a good option. There are many excellent
off-road routes, which while not ideal for commuting by bike, (roads
are generally better for that), are great if you want to explore the
area and take photos. You can walk or cycle over the original Severn
Bridge but not the new one.

I remember being taken to watch the road sections being floated down the
Severn and lifted into place by two big cranes....

Great picture!

Does anyone know of any decent place to park? I've taken shots of the
first bridge before, but this time I am thinking about the second
bridge. Cycling isn't really an option with all my video equipment. :-)

There's a defunct pulp mill on the Welsh bank :-( which St Regis may
let you view from.

If you go to a place called Severn Beach (not much beach just a
village) you can walk underneath the new Severn Bridge along a nice
tarmac path along the flood defences right next to the water. You'll
find an x mark or two saying "photographers stand here". Street
parking close by is easy. If you want an actual walk you can follow
the Severn Way signs either way. As others have said the area around
the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Avon Gorge about 10 miles away is
very nice too if you like bridges.

If I was to go at a low tide, and this might sound like an obviously
dumb question, but does anyone have any idea of how easy/safe it is to
venture onto the mud? I might like to get some low down shots with
foregrounds of stones/timber etc. I just don't want to end up as the
'idiot' who ends up on the news due to the SARA guys needing to be
called!

The first bit of the shore close to the bridge is rocks. You can get
right down to the water line if the tides in. Couldn't tell you
exactly how safe the mud is if you want to walk on it if the tide's
further out. Ask a fisherman. Bit squidgy I expect. Bit further left
as you look at the bridge is a flat sandy bit with some big bits of
driftwood and further along from that the shoreline is grassier. You
