first bike - shogun?

im a newbie looking to buy my first bike, budget is A$500-A$600 and i'll be doing a combination of road and trail riding. i was looking at the GT avalanche 2.0 but got talked out of it, apparently their quality has been suspect after they went bankrupt?
the same person recommended Shogun mtb's. i've tried to find some info on them on the web but not much luck. anyone know anything about their bikes or the company? any other suggestions for a starting bike in that price range?

I've recently purchased a Shogun Metro GS which is one of their hybrid range.

I can highly recommend the Shogun. They use a Merida frame, and higher level components than anything in the same price range (Trek, Giant, GT etc).

The 2004 range is another step up from the 2003 range and is even better value for money.
