Deore xt shifter brake lever cable replacement

Can anyone tell me how on earth do you take one of these things apart to see the end on the cable? I've removed two covers on the unit and still I cannot get the old cable out...

I've got the LX model and it wasn't that hard. Two screws on the forward side got the cover at the back of the gear selection indicator off, and there it was.

To work this out all I did was go to the Shimano website and download the instructions. It took a few tries to get the right document, but it was pretty easy in the end.
