I had bad experience with mechanical disc, but maybe the higher end ones are much better. But then I would prefer the Hydraulic ones. I am going to purchase a rockhopper, but which should i pick? mechanical disc or vbrakes?

Get the hydraulic ones dude. Some mechanical discs like the Avid BBs are good but they pale in comparison to a hydraulic disc. You can even get some hydraulic setups relatively cheaply if your budget doesn't stretch too far. Even some Hayes Soles will go better than cable diskies.

Yep, I agree. I have hydrolic disks on my Trek and they have worked flawlessly.

I disagree about the hayes. Hayes Sole disks are utter crap and I would rather spend my money on an XTR V brake or an avid BB mechanical disk. If you can afford a good set of hydraulics (IE NOT Hayes) then they are probabloy the best bet. I still have V brakes on my xc race bike as it helps keep the weight down and I dont need the extra power a disk offers. It all depends on what sort of riding you are doing and whether there are any special offers knocking round. Magura Julies are a reasonable hydraulic disk and can be gotten off ebay relatively cheaply (<£100 for a full set).
