1974 Colnago - any others out there?

:D Today I finished cleaning and adjusting my 1974 Colnago which has been in storage for 23 years (not seriously used since 1979). What a joy to ride it again - but considerably different from my Stumpjumber FSR. I'll buy a new rode bike soon but I'm wondering if anyone still rides these antiques?

My 1978 Colnago suffered the right rear dropout cracking (Colnago marked copy of a Campy 1010B dropout). It was replaced by a Colnago Profile CX, which I still ride every now and again.

I still drag out my 1984 Colnago Super once in a while. I usually only use it if the club ride is going to be flat as I really don't like the downtube shifters. I'm also afraid of flatting a sewup tire.I rode a century on it last fall in under 6 hours.Despite all the "steel is real" talk, my Colnago Dream is a far superior bike in my opinion.

I repacked the bearings on my original SR track pedals (just like Eddy) pedals, put them back on my '79 Gios, and took it for a spin a couple evenings ago. Compared to my carbon Felt, the Gios rides rough and steers "floaty," due to steeper head angle and longish rake. On the other hand, it fits like a custom bike. Also, there is no substitute for Cinelli Mod 66 and 64 handlebars. When I got back on the Felt I was reaching for the downtube shifters.

A couple of weeks ago someone dumped a California Masi Gran Criterium on the sidewalk with a sign saying "Free." It fits me perfectly (60 cm c-t), and came with an aluminum framed Univega that fits my daughter perfectly (20" c-t). The Univega was an easy fix-up, but the Masi needs a few parts.

Where do you go walking?!! I've got an early Chrome-Moly frame Univega for my lady. It is a little too small for me:( , but a really nice ride all the same. Set it up with all newer (late 90's) Shimano 600 components. I have just a bit of touch up painting to do and it will be ready to go again.

Lyons, Colorado, across the street from the elementary school. The funny thing is that I saw the bikes the day before and assumed someone was coming back for them. We were having a music festival that weekend and the streets are full of flakes for a few days. The second time, I remarked that they were still there and my daughter's friend pointed out the sign. Stopped the car, loaded them into the trunk right there, and later wrote a thank you on the sign.

I haven't ride it but I would love to!

I love my old Colnago Super with full Super Record, but it really lets you appreciate the improvements in the last 25 years. The toeclip pedals are a pain to get into and my leather sole shoes are not very stiff. The unpadded cello bar tape looks so nice, but is slippery and tranmits all of the road shock. Every time I reach down to shift the downtube shifters, I swerve.Hard to believe I used to ride this 6000 miles a year. Maybe that's why my back is so screwed up now.LOL.

I know what you mean about appreciating the improvements over the past 25 years. I have an '82 Super that's a blast to ride, but the newer iron (or aluminum, or carbon, or....) and new components just make life a little easier.

Wonder when they'll come out with carbon fiber disks, about the L4 & L5 level.

Get rid of your family, go get some beer, or coffee, or whatever, and go nuts looking at all these pictures for a couple of hours
