Recovery time after saddle sore surgery
Hello,
It seems I'm going to have to go the surgery route. I had a saddle sore develope around July 22nd after an 80 mile road race. Today is August 14. I've been cycling for 8 years and never got one like this. I took 8 days off the bike and It still didn't heal. I finally went to the doctor and was told surgery was needed to have it removed.

I used everything to try and get it to heal. I used draw out salve, baking soda, hot baths, draining it, etc... and nothing. The sore started to form a cyst and it kept filling up with abcess (yellowish fluid). Gross I know .

I guess my question is: Does anybody have any experience with saddle sore surgery? What is the recovery time? How long can I expect to be off the bike?
I've pretty much written off the remainder of my season  . I'm having the surgical procedure this coming Monday.

Any response would be appreciated, thanks.

I had one of these done just over a year ago. It was not the result of riding. Mine ruptured and started bleeding. So it was an emergency room procedure. I was not doing any excercising for three weeks.

But recovery time will depend on several things.

1) size of the abcess
2) size of the hole made to remove it (that will have to heal)
3) how infected the abcess is.

I stated that I did not exercise for three weeks. I say that knowing that there was no way I could have taken to a saddle at that stage (I was not into cycling then).

So you doctor will have the best idea on just how long you need to set down the bike. Depending on the variables listed above, it could be anywhere from 1 - 2 months.

Thanks for the information. I'm going in on Monday for the consultation to see if I need surgery or not. The truth is that mine does not hurt when I ride. I took the time off the bike not because of pain but because I wanted it to heal.

The area of the sore was more along the inner thigh. Not an area were I sit on the saddle. It has gotten better but it still needs to be drained a bit.

Monday the Doc will tell me if I need the surgery or not. He may just drain it and see how it does.

Although I have mentally prepared myself just in case I have to take time off. YEAH, even if it is 1-2 months

thanks again.

If it is on the inner thigh, and is not really impacted while riding...you may not be off the bike very long. maybe he will just drain it. But oooo I can still feel the pain just thinking about it. Be prepared to utter a few word you normally would not let lose in public.

In any event...best of luck...and let us know how it goes for you.
