Why do you ride cat 4-5 when you are beating the cat 1-2 in RR times, and best TTer in the state? Is it so you can tell your wife, kids, friends how you beat everyone? Does it make you feel like an achiever to not have competition? I may sound a little bitter, and yea I am. I cant wait to get my 7 more points for a cat 3. I'm sure the competition in cat 3 will have less sandbaggers since they are in cat 4-5. And it may really be nice if I ever make a 2, then I dont have to worry about the scaredy cats who sandbag. Oh well, I lost today to the strongest man in the state. Makes me feel better, but get the F out of 4 dude  Let me win some more.

Damn, I feel better :)

By the way, you have 32 points, 12 over what you need to make cat 3. So whats the excuse?

That is interesting. Why wouldn't folks want to compete with stronger cyclist and teams is beyond me as well. Is the guy trying to help others on his team gain points?

No , all his teamates are 3 and above  I was thinking it may be for the money. Not much but it may pay his cable bill , car insurance or something dunno. Or for bragging rights? I was hoping some baggers here would explain it. I know they are here.

We have a guy here who is a Cat V with 18 mass start races. He places fairly well in all of his races but seems to have no intentions of catting up. I'm not sure why really but it really ticks me off...like I want anyone to win the race, EXCEPT for him.

To the OP: Your location says AZ, but perchance are you refering to S. California? There are a couple of cat4 guys from Cal that posted some outragious times for the VOS TT here in AZ earlier this year. I wasn't in the same cat so I didn't follow their progress beyond that. Anyway, they beat all the 3's and a good portion of the P1,2 field. Seemed odd, but then again I haven't a clue about their history...

Gil,

No, the bagger and baggers I'm referring to are here in AZ.

As soon as I got my 10 starts I up graded, I couldn't wait to get out of 5. There is no money to be won, and lots of crashes. Now I cant wait to get to cat 3. I am driving 186 miles round trip once a week to a race to get my points, and so is this bagger I'm speaking of(he lives near the race). The top riders me included decided to let this idiot race alone. We could maybe gang attack him, but we dont want him to have any fun racing with us. Besides, he would probably still beat us. Perhaps he will get board and move on.

A team I raced for had guys who won Cat. 4 races regularly but would race in Cat. 5 races as well. I was essentially kicked off the team for commenting on how this was sandbagging on the team mailing list. More excuses then VdB has for doping products at his house.

My goal is to one day be accused of sandbagging.

To the OP. Regarding the Pichacho TT. How did it go this Sunday? Did you tell the sand bagger of all time to go pound sand or what? Or did you get pounded again?

as a cat 5 racer myself, who is constantly striving to just hang on to the main feild, i have to agree with zaskar here. cat 5 should be for begining racers, and/or those who are not fast enough to advance catagories. now, i understand that every cat 5 race will always have a few dark horses, if not sandbaggers, who are just plain out better than me and either didn't know how strong they were or are still working toward category advancement. i humbly accept that and congratulate their performances.

if, on the other hand, someone is an experienced racer, knows exactly what they are doing, and is racing in a category well below their potential, it is hard to see the justification for this. as an experieced tennis player, for instance, i would take no pride at all in beating up on a ten year old kid or anyone who was well below my level. in fact, i would find this shameful and embarrasing. for me, there is no such thing as an easy race. it is not like i can race against juniors (even though i'm sure some would beat me!) or in the over seventy group and i wouldn't want to if i could. racing is supposed to be a challenge or else the win would be completely empty. everyone trains hard to race in the level they should be racing in and if you are winning races too easily with no motivation to compete against people at your own level, you are doing a disservice to everyone you beat and to yourself.

Seriously dude, this looks like your problem not his... who cares if he is a sandbagger? There is a mandatory point accumulation limit where he will be forced to upgrade anyway (as long as results are reported to USA Cycling). Bike racing should be about friendly competition, at least if you aren't getting paid for it. If you lose blame yourself and try to learn from your mistakes (tactics, training, preparation, etc.), then go have a beer with the guy that beat you!

My post is a rant, not a problem. I would like to see the rules of the "force" upgrade if you have a link.

How is it competition when a so called competitor is racing in a high cat with pro power? Its like me entering my Impala 383 stroker into a race with hybrid cars over and over, year after year winning all of em(lots of fun that would be). He is strong and does have talent. If he had balls he would join the others that match his talent, he has more then enough points to up. Oh well, I'm over it. I told him to his face he is scared of competition and he looked like he was going to cry. I guess I hurt his feelings. The cat 4 guys are going to chip in and buy him a dress.

Looking at the verbiage it is called an automatic upgrade... I guess it is possible they mean if you request it, there is no discretion of the official.... he has to upgrade you... I interpreted it to mean your license is automatically upgraded. I don't know the real answer here.

Either way, my point is don't waste your time crying sour grapes... if he is a sandbagger, so what? It has no pertinence towards your ability as a cyclist... and you should be able to mark him and sit on his wheel to get a better finish than you would have without him if you are racing smart. ;)
