France : general election 2007
France goes to the polls on Sunday next to election a new President.

Jacques Chirac's time in office is "fini".

After the last round, there are only two candidates left for election :

Segolene Royal of the Socialist Party and Nicholas Sarkozy of Centre/Right party.

The two candidates are busy trying to woe supports of defeated centrist candidates knocked out of the race two weeks ago.

This election will prove to be a close run affair - as it stands Sarkozy has a lead over Madame Royal but election surveys predict a close race.

Personally I would like to see Royal win - that would be a first as she would be the first female French president and her policies seem to be more in line with traditional French viewpoints.

I'm interested to see how this one comes out, whether France wants to go the route offered by Sarkozy (something similar to American "conservatism") or not. I think the people of France would regret it if that's what they were to choose.
