Outrunning ain't the best way. That way you only keep them more curious. Try to shout at them! And that's how I've scared away even some stubby bulldogs. Or if you see a smaller one, yeah- ram it! And sometimes the best way is just gettin off your bike and keeping it between you and the wow-wow. And have a talk with it :) he'll lose his bloody interest.
nonetheless I hate the dogs

keep a golf club (preferebly old heavy iron) attatched to your frame, swing it at the dogs, hit dogs, and they will not bother you again...unless they are trained fighting dogs, then ya gotta pull out the .45 :)
i normally kick at them, once they notice your willing to attack to, they may keep running after you but they wont be too close to your path :) riding along at 20 mph on my roadie, most dogs can only keep up for maybe 30 feet on pavement, and their paws probably start to hurt more than its worth for them!

Other than either Halt or just outrunning them, what is a good method to keep dogs away?I've not been cycling very long but came up with a beauty way of getting my own back on 1 particular dog that always chases me. Personally I'm a little bit nervous around dogs that I don't know. This particular brute sits waiting for me I swear every saturday morning but the route I do is too good to let a dog spoil it for me. So there I was saturday morning and the chase began. Rather than the usual sprint for dear life, I drew the thing out for about a mile and a half, slowing down and speeding up. As it became tired and panted like mad I turned the tables, armed with a referee whistle I turned round and started chasing the dog. The sound of the whistle was filled with my laughter of seeing this poor dog petrified by a madman on a bike with it's tail between its legs. It did the trick, who knows what this saturday will be like. Watch this space...

I realize that I'm a little behind but I started carrying a bear spray cannister in my second water bottle holder [I had to bend it slightly]. This was prompted by a couple of cougar attacks locally and after staring one down clad in lycra with a large rock in my hand I was cured. Several mtn bikers in the area carry handguns which isn't a very good option IMO. I average two bear encounters per year.
I've never needed the spray except for riding out down a canyon road a homeowner's large growley pet took exception to our presence and began a sprinted angle towards interception. I used the spray to fog the area behind us and watched him run full bore into the cloud and turn tail.

These are usually Collies, working sheep dogs that probably think they are chasing some strange animal from their land. I usually try to outrun them and when that doesn't work have just turned and bellowed F*** OFF! That always stops them in their tracks, I guess becuase they suddenly realise I am a human.
But I love your method John, turning the dog menace into sport! Gonna get me a whistle! :D
