So they are worried about him causing crashes and injury to other riders? I couldn't understand why he would ride at all if doctors were saying another injury to the head could be lethal or have serious effects, because of his prior injury.
Okay. I think I understand now. He was unable to convince doctors that he was safe, and wasn't a risk, in the peleton. That he wouldn't black out or something. Seems to me that decision could be reversible if he showed a year later that he hadn't blacked out. So maybe its not the end for Saul.
I think this one is filed under
"wait til next time"
it is still to be played out. Just a little melodrama. Tell me in 24 months if he retired.
Equivalent to Jordan's first retirement when some guy murdered his father. Tempory, until confirmation.

And it makes for an even better comeback story/book.

I don't know for certain but I speculate that CA doesn't want the exposure to liability (financial or otherwise) that will accrue if they allow him to ride for their team competively. Would you want to be the guy that gave him the OK to ride and he crashes again?
I believe the psychological tests the CA doctors are relying on to deny Raisin the opportunity to ride again are fairly subjective in their nature and it is possible another teams' doctors will give him the green light to race again. However, I doubt this will occur for same reason aforementioned...
That makes a lot of sense.
Even if the tests are subjective, it does not necessairly mean the decision is not the best for Raisin. There are similar situations in boxing, where punchy fighters can always find a doctor somewhere to give them a clean bill of health to fight, but they really should not ever fight again.
Didn't Raisin have an earlier incident (before his big crash) where he blacked out or had a siezure and crashed?

I hope the best for Saul for whatever the outcome will be. I hope that he will continue to train and have hope, but I also hope that he will be able to step into a new career path if the path will not change.
Evander Holyfield was not supposed to ever fight again because the hospital found an irregularity in his heart and his license to fight was revoked, but he recently fought in Moscow. There is always hope things can change.
I met Saul last year at his fund raiser ride in his home town and I hope I get a chance to meet and ride with again if he repeats the charity ride. A really nice and seemingly humble guy when I met him.

Contador had serious head injury from crash a few years ago. He had an unconcious episode in 2006. He still rides.

Roman Feillu had his leg almost amputated as a kid I think. Not sure on that.
But in his teenage years, to correct the one inch imbalance in length, he had his leg broken, and put in a brace, to lengthen it.
Not much fanfare about that.
What they call in Europe "harden the fuck up", in the US, the go write books about it, and sell a few thousand units to gullible public.
Hi Thunder,
By your standard what would make Roman's story really great is if you didn't even know about it at all. I guess you think Saul should have prevented word of his coma getting out. As for putting it down in a book, blame me, not him. You are so far off the mark on some of these statements you are making that you have no idea.
As for the "gullible public" buying Saul's book, lots of readers have told me their life was actually improved by reading his story, some of them in very concrete and measurable ways. Imagine that.

I stand by my thoughts.
Americans put out books.
Contador, Feillu, Pantani, Museeuw, Sunderland, all had life threatening, and career threatening accidents, I think they all involved getting ploughed over/through by motor vehicles.
Does the fact I heard about it, make my point a contradiction? Nup. Just read cyclingnews, gotta expect a little cycling news, when the site is www.cyclingnews.com (http://www.cyclingnews.com) dude.
Yeah, those folks would buy those "Self Help" books too probably and think Tony Robbins is the next coming. Biggest fraud of an industry EVER.
Everyone has just adopted an Armstrong marketing 101 model.
But Raisin, from what one gauges on public utterances and information, seems like a great person, and a humble one.
So, I would like to see him back on the bike, and taking the risk. I reckon he will. Give it 18 months. He will be back.

Excuse me for misunderstanding that you feel like it's okay to hear about stories like these as long they're not in a book. I'm sure that makes plenty of sense to you. I guess it doesn't need to make sense to anybody else.

Yes, and the people that write and publish these books just want to get the story out so that others can be inspired. They usually sell them at cost or donate all profits to charity.

It was a pleasure for me to be able to donate a pic for the book and a great cause. Saul is a great guy and Dave is a great writer.

Apparently I've stumbled into the twilight zone. Thunder and Cranky will probably be thrilled to learn that Saul hasn't yet earned anything in royalties from this book, and neither have I (I'll admit, that wasn't the plan going in). Along the way we've become great friends, donated some money and time to charity, and inspired more than a few people. Whether you approve of any of that or not, I'm done with this discussion. Goodbye.

Something to be considered: if Raisin had fared better in the National Time Trial rather than finishing last, I'm sure the CA doctors and Legeay would have deemed him fit to continue riding competitively for CA...

I think that is a good thing Dave.
Just giving another side of the coin tho.
And Joe Lindsay wrote about this too.

yes, might have seen a slipping of "ethics" with such expedient incentive.

Problem with these forums is that it lets idiots like Cranky talk off the top of their head when they hardly know anything about the subject at hand.
I think I'll go read that book now.

A simple concussion is usually no big deal, many of us have been knocked out for a minute or two. What happened with Saul was a horrible injury and, brain injuries tend to be cumulative in severity, and with each one the likelihood of re-injury increases.

Saul was racing for his first time while everybody else was peaking. Anyhow, his TT performance showed he could still ride at a very high level again. Leguay choose not to exploit him. He could have easily said "what the hell, I'm paying him, might as well get as much out of him as possible."
I also don't buy that they were worried about liability. That is why god created waivers.

Lawyers created liability waivers and they are a good tool but don't always apply especially when you have expert opinion that provides forseeable and avoidable dangers.
Some state courts don't even recognize these type of contracts as valid. Unfortunately!

Holyfield is not the best example. He never had a lot of brain cells to start out with, so it is rather hard to discern natural stupidity from punch damage; but he is definitely someone who should not still be fighting. A lot of his fans wish he would give it up.
Boxing has given a lot of sad examples for what happens to people who get hit in the head too many times.
