MTB Wheels
Hi,

I'm looking to replace the wheelset on my hard tail MTB they're creaking and side walls are very thin. This bike does all of my commuting work and rarely goes off road (thats what the dualy is for).

Anyway I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to look for as far as wheel sets go, I'm thinking of speding about $300 all up. I've also noticed a few other threads on wheels and they generally sum up with

Good:
Mavics

Bad:
Alex X2100 rims
Quandos hubs
Shimano R550

Unknown:
Sun ryhno Lite w/ Deore hubs

So I'm basiclly looking for recommendations of whats good (I am prepared to extend my price range). Also would it be better if get wheels built up from parts ?

Cheers

I think the SUN rims are beefier than MAVIC rims & come in more than one width (generally, "a good thing") ...

YES -- have the wheels hand built.

The NAMEBRAND wheel set works out quite a bit cheaper out here than building up a wheel.,a decent set of shemano disk ready sealed bearing rims comes in at under R2000 Here in cape town.thats about 180 pounds.

Mavic 717 rims, Shimano Deore LX or XT hubs, DT Swiss Competition spokes, handbuilt. You don't need anything beefier for what you describe.
Shimano R550 is 700C only, isn't it?
