The essential Perth ride
Hi all,
I'm an Adelaidean heading over to Perth for the Easter weekend to visit some friends. On one of the days I'm planning on renting a road bike and going for a ride with my mate from Perth. He also rides a road bike but apparently hasn't done a lot of riding since moving there at the start of the year.
So.... can anyone give me an idea of a good route or riding destination? Would probably be looking for something around 50km or so in distance. Starting fairly close to the city centre/river, I think. Hills are fine and encouraged ;-)
I guess what I'm asking is what would be the 'essential' Perth ride of this length. e.g. if someone asked the same thing about Adelaide I would say up Norton Summit Rd, over Mt Lofty, down the old freeway.
Many thanks,
Dan

The essential Perth ride
There are plenty (OK thousands ) of weekend warriors riding around the river on Perth's cycle paths if that is your thing but they are pretty crowded & the ride is not too challenging , the best areas where the competitive riders & triathletes go training are up in the Darling Ranges (only 300m high) . It is an hour ride to get to them or head out on a train to Armadale or Midland which are both at the foot of the hills. A great ride is up from Armadale along the Albany Hwy through Canning Dams, Araluen , Karagullen & then Kalamunda, likewise from Midland through Darlington , Mundaring Weir then Kalamunda , either of those rides you could end up back at the Midland station & cut out the ride through suburbia. Don't think that the trains have peak hour restriction on the weekends but best to ring & check.
