Was in Melbourne recently from Sydney - there are a few good fixies at SHM in the city - they seem to have some good communter fixed wheels worked out.

I bought a fuji track bike [$600] - resprayed and put on my own seat / post & bullhorns. Still - a built up commuter will work out cgeaper.
